What do you wear to a school open day?

We are off to an open day for an independent school at the weekend and I have no idea if you need to be dressed in casual or smart clothes for these things . It only really occurred to me last night when DH asked if he needed to wear a shirt and tie, adding that he hoped not!! A recent episode of Eastenders springs to mind when Ian made a total prat of himself and I am keen to avoid standing out for being different/stupid!! My feeling was smart casual probably, but if anyone else knows different I'd appreciate some input.
Thanks

you can tell a lot from suede boots
"i dont walk in the rain"
"i get a cab"
" these arent my only boots cos if they were they wouldnt be suede"
etc

TellusMater · 04/10/2007 15:56

But nailpoilish - if I felt confident in 'weekend scruffs' (which I'm sure I would if I only knew what they were - they sound very me ) - that would be OK?

LadySanders · 04/10/2007 15:56

poor punctuation down to typing quickly without properly working it out in my head first.

though as it happens, i got a new man AND a new car. special offer.

TellusMater · 04/10/2007 15:56

OMG

Am actually slightly stressed by this thread now...

I feel the need to re-examine my footwear...

nailpolish · 04/10/2007 15:56

of course!

when i am in scruffy jeans i look about 15

nailpolish · 04/10/2007 15:57

im more than twice that i hasten to add

Caroline1852 · 04/10/2007 15:58

nailpolish - You forgot - "I have a suede brush"

nailpolish · 04/10/2007 15:58

i also struggle to look teacher in the eye if im not wearing sometihng 'smart'

i still have that impending dread of lines or detention

Could someone post a list of 'yes' and 'no' against the Boden catalogue?

I would guess that those 'brushed cotton pull on trousers' are a no-no?

Why am I on this thread?

DS goes to a school where one father sees fit to attend school events wearing a T Shirt that says 'That's not baldness - it's a solar panel for a sex machine!'

nailpolish · 04/10/2007 15:59

oh god yes the suede brush
with its golden bristles

nailpolish · 04/10/2007 16:00

pmsl blu

TellusMater · 04/10/2007 16:02

Although those trousers would provide easier access for Issy...

LadySanders · 04/10/2007 16:02

there's a dad at my son's school who wears shorts, even when its fairly cold, but with those brown pull on ankle boots.... not sure if they're suede or not.

motherinferior · 04/10/2007 16:04

You couldn't wear nipple tassles with suede boots, though, could you. It would have to be long pointy ones, shiny.

Blandmum · 04/10/2007 16:07

Heavens, I never even notice what the parents are wearing.

Really I haven't a clue.

I think one of the mothers might have been wearing a red jumper and I think one of the dads had a blue shirt, but that is as far as it goes.

and as for looking at their feet! I don't have the time

If people feel happier getting dressed up, then fine, dress up. Wear whatever you like. I bet the teaching staff will be far too busy to notice!

nailpolish · 04/10/2007 16:07

suede boots look nice with loin cloths

Blu · 04/10/2007 16:08

TellUs - the one's Issy's DH wears are called 'brushed cotton pull-offs'.

freakypenguin · 04/10/2007 16:08

it's our open day this saturday.

we (the staff) are in suits. end of. with attractive name badges.

parents turn up in anything from jeans to suits.

honestly, it doesn't matter.

perhaps you're coming to my open day! i'll look out for the nipple tassles...

Blandmum · 04/10/2007 16:09

If you are goingfor the loin cloth option make sure to oil up first......

TellusMater · 04/10/2007 16:10

MB - you teach in a state school. I will go to ds's parents' evening in what I shall now refer to as 'weekend scruffs' with impunity.

Well, that or the nipple tassels...

nailpolish · 04/10/2007 16:10

lol freakypenguin!

you cna do the mumsnet wink. or handshake. jsut to be sure...

TellusMater · 04/10/2007 16:10

Did anyone watch Eastenders recently when Ian Beale tried to get his daughter into a girl's boarding school? (Obviously, I caught it by accident!). His pseudo posh accent reminded me of "Mary Poppins you look beautiful".
So, never mind what are you going to wear. What accent might you adopt for the day?

Caroline1852 · 04/10/2007 16:12

girls'
