Just checked ORT and he is beyond their stage 8 so what does it mean ??

By the way the numeracy is not great so this is not a G&T

Can any one help ??

TIA

so are all the different reading schemes the same "level" - I mean - DS1 is well into the stage 8 books - but of Storyworlds - surely that's not the same as Stage 8 ORT???

Or is there some other "magic" list which tells you what level they're at regardless of what reading scheme they're using

(btw - DS1 knows his 2 and 10 times tables brilliantly and he's only just started yr2 - so nerrrrrrrr)

Partitioning is breaking numbers down into easier ones to calculate. ie 34 + 72 is like adding 30 and 70 to get 100, then 4 + 2 = 6 --> answer 106

Twigaletto · 02/10/2007 20:40

see that's what I said adding up but the wrong way

VeniVidiVickiQV · 02/10/2007 20:45

Isnt that how its supposed to be done?

Twigaletto · 02/10/2007 20:56

34 + 72

no we were always taught to add up units(ones) column first, then 10's

VeniVidiVickiQV · 02/10/2007 20:58

That'll be where I went wrong then

Could never put long division/multiplication down on paper either.....I'd always get the answers right, but lose marks for not showing my workings appropriately

Bree -sounds very similar to my DS (who is afefctionately called a 'little professor' by our friends). His teacher told us at the first parents evening of Year 2 that he had 'finished' all the reading books they had at school and suggested we go to the library and also continue to encourage his love on non-fiction.

He has just started Juniors in Year 3 and was offended because they gave him an ORT Stage 14 book.

Books he enjoyed in Year 2 included:

Jack Stalwart series by Elizabeth Singer Hunt
Pete Johnson books e.g. The Korski Code etc
Astrosaurs
and lots of the sets previously mentioned from The Book People e.g. "I wonder why?" series, Usbourne Puzzle Adventure etc

We also have the Horrible Science series, but although he can read them, I think the content is still a little advanced for him to properly understand.

Personally I hated Captain Underpants because of all the deliberate spelling mistakes etc.

Whizzz · 02/10/2007 22:19

VVV you have obviously not tried the Chinese method of multiplication then !

prepare to be baffled but its really clever !

VeniVidiVickiQV · 02/10/2007 23:42

That's kinda how it works in my head

Carbonel · 03/10/2007 10:31

OMG they don't do that in Yr 2 do they? My dd is miles away from that (altho she is beginning to know her numberbonds - she proudly told me - to 1000 )

Enid · 03/10/2007 10:32

ort goes up to at least 14 (treetops)

get him a set of sprinters from the book people

I ought to get commision for this

Carbonel · 03/10/2007 10:42

these are fab - cheaper than the Book people site and earn 'commission' for your school too. They are very funny; my dd loved them whereas she found the sprinters a bit unexciting

My ds loves her reading them to him too.

popsycal · 03/10/2007 10:43

does anyone want a link for parents to explain how we teach maths these days?

Twigaletto · 03/10/2007 11:08

ooo popsycal you tease .. of course we do

Twigaletto · 03/10/2007 11:09

carbonel .. schoollink is the book people but with a charity donation to school

we're making our way through the silly stories atm

popsycal · 03/10/2007 11:47

parents' guides to maths methods
the 3rd, 4th and 5th links on the main part of the page are especially helpful!

popsycal · 03/10/2007 11:48

mybe i ougt to post a threqad on its own....

Piffle · 03/10/2007 11:51

ds1 went straight from ORT on to Narnia ner ner ner
and dd is 4 and knows her 11 x tables - great aspect of being visually impaired is... her memory is formidable....HA!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 03/10/2007 13:23

Enid??? I thought you had been lost forever?

Did cod's begging wear you down?

RosaLuxembourg · 03/10/2007 13:43

Just to confuse you further - in our school they do colours. I think gold is the top - or is it lime?

singersgirl · 03/10/2007 13:47

Our school does the colours too, and Band 8 in that system is the purple band - after that comes, I think, Gold, White and then Lime. White used to be the top and then they added Lime.

Carbonel · 03/10/2007 16:06

Our school do colours and shapes - dd is 'pink rectangle' and ds is 'pink spot'.

He has had a mix of stage 3 - 5 ORT and stage 6 storyworlds in the same 'pink spot' category.

Not too worried not to understand the system as he reads well for a 4 year old [smug emoticon]

seeker · 04/10/2007 09:42

ds is in year 2 and on white books. Don't know what this means. And if you think partitioning is bad, wait til you get to chunking. Dd tried to expalain it to me when she was in year 4, but all I could think of was chocolate.
