Choice of instrument: Does a trumpet and a cornet have the same key and the same fingering?

I seem to remember that they do, but I want to check as it strikes me a cornet will be much easier for an 8 year old to hold but a trumpet gives more scope for joining orchestras etc.

yes, I seem to remember you start on a B flat trumpet or cornet

mummypoppins · 12/09/2007 14:12

Yes they do..interchangeable completely. I play both.

I started on the Cornet at 11 as it was easier to hold and most younger ones do but then I moved to a school that didnt have a brass band only an orchestra so moved to a trumpet at 14 no problem.I also played a flugel horn which again is similar.

HTH

CarGirl · 12/09/2007 14:14

I moved onto a tenor horn again the fingering the same even though it's in a different key but up until that age I only ever played transposed music anyway

scareditsgettingworse · 12/09/2007 14:15

most towns ha ve a brass band that will welcome a nwe player

ju · 12/09/2007 14:17

Cor blimey us brass players are in a clique of our own !

Mummypoppins, do you still play in a brass band? I play in a village band, fourth section, off to Harrogate at the end of September (preen)

mummypoppins · 12/09/2007 15:12

ju..............on and off for a third section band which I think are now being demoted. They practice twice a week and I just can't commit with work commitments family etc.

I also dep for a couple of other local bands in the parks and fetes in the summer. I do enjoy it but I am pretty useless really when you hear some of the fab players about!

my ds (10 ) started the cornet last year and it has been a big success. He is quite small and the position closer to the body makes the cornet easier to handle than the trumpet he tried.

missgriss · 12/09/2007 15:32

I play in a brass band too. I'm in the percussion section ! We are in first section. Not going to Harrogate this year though

BeetrootBevan · 12/09/2007 15:35

ds2 platys the french Horn - much needed in orchestras!

LIZS · 12/09/2007 15:38

ds starting tenor horn this term.

KommandantColditz · 12/09/2007 16:12

Cornet same as trumpet but has a slightly mellower sound, and will be easier to handle for a child.

I have played cornet, soprano cornet, trumpet, flugelhorn and baritone, and was in a fourth level brass band playing all sorts of parts for a long time!

get her into a brass band when she gets going - free group tution from the conductor if she has the patience to sit around waiting for the others!

LIZS · 12/09/2007 16:56

We decided on that for ds partly as he can sit to play and therefore support himself better. His music teacher has said he can join the swing band when he gets going ! First lesson tomorrow.

Wow ! See it's a small world really.

PeachesMcLean · 12/09/2007 23:35

a Brass band clique on MN!!

Third section. Done dreadfully at Harrogate before.

ju · 12/09/2007 23:41

I know Peaches am a bit myself at band clique ! tee hee.

Went to harrogate last year too, came 5th so hoping for even better this time. Gawd the expense though, the grind of fundraising.... sigh. Heigh ho

Anyone else find themselves humming marches under their breath while they are walking along?

Anyone else know, not only the tunes, but the counters to every hymn in the Sally Army book?

Just me then? LOL

ghosty · 13/09/2007 07:59

My dad does that Kommandant ... has done for as long as I can remember (whistling marches under his breath)
He was brought up in the Salvation Army and played in the Coldstream Guards.
Doesn't play any more though and none of us followed in his footsteps ...
Have a nice clique everyone ...

KommandantColditz · 13/09/2007 08:13

I can join in and everything!

PeachesMcLean · 13/09/2007 22:13

Not marches, but next month's test piece is driving me mad already. Can't get it out of my head. Grr...

Dropdeadfred · 13/09/2007 22:16

I have played the cornet, trumpet and flugelhorn..
