11 plus tutoring costs

Ceje39 · 08/12/2019 21:32

I've been quoted £120 for a tutor with a good track record for the 11 plus in south east London. This doesn't seem like the going rate to me, am I wrong? TIA

Insane

NellyBarney · 09/12/2019 22:23

That's insane! 45-50/hour should get you an experienced fully qualified primary teacher with extra experience like math-co-ordinator and special knowledge of the school you are applying to, including agency fees. If no agency is involved, it would be more 30 to 35 pounds with such high level of experience, or 20 to 25 pounds for a tutor who has a degree but is no qualified teacher.

fedup21 · 09/12/2019 22:25

Which schools are you looking at?

We paid £25 an hour.

helpmum2003 · 09/12/2019 22:27

Crumbs.

ItsChristmaaaaaaaaas · 09/12/2019 22:32

No - way too much. Yes I’ve seen tutors charge £200 and hour but to be honest - I think they are probably decent tutors and are just going for a crazy high price that they know someone will pay!

£55-65 will get you a very good tutor via an agency with good knowledge of your target school and experience of the exams. Of course the best way is to get a recommendation.

Panpastels · 09/12/2019 23:14

Wow! Dd passed with a DIY approach of books and a subscription to an 11+ website.

ItsChristmaaaaaaaaas · 10/12/2019 07:56

It depends on the target school I guess too - some have such a high number of entrants the standards are silly high.

NoooorthonerMum · 10/12/2019 07:57

I live in the south just outside of London and the going rate is 50 per hour for an experienced 11+ tutor.

Africa2go · 10/12/2019 19:52

OP if you told the agency that you've moved here from abroad they may well be taking advantage on the assumption that you're fairly wealthy and probably dont have a point of reference yet for a reality check.

JoJoSM2 · 10/12/2019 21:11

That’s completely ridiculous. I’m in S London and used to do 11+ on the side. I charged £40/h as a very experienced teacher (incl working in grammars) with an excellent track record of getting kids through 11+. A friend tutored in the priciest parts of London prepping for top indies and charged £60/h. £120/h is taking the proverbial.

QGMum · 11/12/2019 09:24

I live in west London and employed tutors directly (not through agency) for 11+ independent school entrance exams. I paid between £35 and £50 per hour. I think £120 is crazy even for London, although I have heard of "super-tutors" who charge this rate.

Try to get recommendations and contact tutors directly rather than via an agency. The best tutors usually get business by word of mouth and don't need to use agencies.

reallyneedmoresleep · 11/12/2019 12:25

Goodness me! I do 11 plus tutoring in Kent and charge £35 per hour. Haven’t heard of anyone charging more than £45

MrsPatmore · 11/12/2019 14:23

£40 for two hours group tuition. Amazing success rates: son qualified for the super selective Grammars in London and the top independents, Westminster Under etc.

Absolutely no need to pay £120 per hour. A friend of ours paid £60 to a tutor who didn't even know a particular schools exam format had changed (and we also had that with a previous 1-1 tutor). Really there is no substitute for doing your own research on the 11+ then you'll be armed with the knowledge of whether a tutor is good or not.

DarlingOscar · 11/12/2019 15:36

We're SE London and got into super selectives and independents with no tutoring at all!

No need to jump on the band wagon just because everyone else is IMO?

PettsWoodParadise · 11/12/2019 21:22

DD self taught for superselective grammar entrance (with a bit of help from mum and Dad), she is now in Y10 doing tutoring support in SE London for £7.50 for 45 mins, she started off doing alternate weeks as the family she started helping had a qualified and experienced tutor at £40 an hour but they’ve just ditched the expensive tutor for DD weekly as they say it is more effective and their DCs react more positively to her style of teaching. P.s this isn’t advertising and no PMs about tutoring please as DD currently has no capacity. £100 an hour is bonkers.

cjpark · 24/12/2019 19:52

Crazy prices! £12.50 an hour and 1/4 here in SW. That in a group of 6 students with a qualified teacher in a small classroom.

FancyAMincePie · 25/12/2019 22:16

Absolutely crazy rates.

Mosaic123 · 29/12/2019 18:17

I used to pay £20 per hour but DS is 30 now!

littlebull · 28/01/2022 23:48

Hi XelaM, I'm finding it difficult to find a tutor for my child to start prepping for the 11+, we too are in North London and wondering if you could share your personal recommendation?
Thanks

Lockdowndramaqueen · 30/01/2022 06:56

Don’t go through an agency try and get some local recommendations. It might be that general tutoring in year four to catch up with uk curriculum and then small group 11+ tutor in year 5 could work better for your son. Good 11+ tutors in London do bring a lot of knowledge about all the schools and formats etc which can be invaluable if you are doing state and private exams as it’s a mine field. We paid £25 per hour for a very knowledgeable tutor for small group sessions with homework materials and tests included in SW London.

Mama1Mia · 31/01/2022 00:33

I paid £60/hr in SW London for 7+ prep.

Pinchofnom · 31/01/2022 00:38

This thread typifies why grammar’s are full of middle/upper middle class kids

ChildHeadache · 31/01/2022 04:16

Wow this is absolutelu crazy money.

SwayingInTime · 31/01/2022 04:38

I actually think a good quality group session is the best for 11+. 121 £25-45/ hour in NW.

xyzandabc · 31/01/2022 05:08
