11 plus tutoring costs

Ceje39 · 08/12/2019 21:32

I've been quoted £120 for a tutor with a good track record for the 11 plus in south east London. This doesn't seem like the going rate to me, am I wrong? TIA

for what? how long would that be

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 08/12/2019 21:34

For how many weeks? We joined a small group and paid about £10 a weekm

Ceje39 · 08/12/2019 21:40

I was quoted that for one hour each week covering all elements of 11 plus for private/grammar entry.

What a strange way of quoting. Dont they usually do a "per hour" price?

I'm a tutor, although for GCSE not for 11+ and the going rate here in south england is £25-30 per hour, so I would expect £20-25 ph for younger kids?

MeMeMeYou · 08/12/2019 21:44

That sounds incredibly expensive. It seems that 11+ tutors can ask a lot more than normal tutors but I’ve not heard of one that dear round here in SW London.

RhymingRabbit3 · 08/12/2019 21:45

Wait... £120 per hour??

Ceje39 · 08/12/2019 21:48

Sorry yes I mean per hour price. This was a tutor put forward by an agency. The rate was £100 with £20 VAT.

LoonyLunaLoo · 08/12/2019 21:51

£120 an hour?!?! WTF?!?! An expensive tutor round here would be £30 an hour!

SunnySomer · 08/12/2019 21:53

Bloody hell. I live a long way from London, but even if I put a “London prices” head on that’s insane. How old is your child? (So how many weeks are you talking about?).

RhymingRabbit3 · 08/12/2019 21:53

That is unbelievably high.

slavetothemoney · 08/12/2019 21:55

We've just started with an experienced 11+ tutor paying £25 p/h which seemed to be the going rate where we are (midlands). £120 p/h seems extortionate!

Corneysjazzband · 08/12/2019 21:56

I am seriously undercharging then! I have 2 11+ pupils at the moment and charge £25 per hour, exactly the same as for my other pupils.
Do you know any other families using a tutor? Ask around for recommendations and prices. £120 is insane!

Ceje39 · 08/12/2019 21:56

He is in year 4 so still a long way off really. He's been taught abroad for most of his education and is just getting use to the English education system so I thought it might be a good idea to start something sooner rather than later. I thought it was very expensive but then wondered if that was the going rate for tutors with a good track record.

OP posts:
Ceje39 · 08/12/2019 22:33

@Corneysjazzband I don't know any other families using a tutor so i thought I'd look at an agency - looks like that's not the place to go to.

We're in the NW. Just paid £40 per hour (1 session per week throughout Yr 5 for 11+ at start of Yr 6). We had to buy all materials / practice papers, pay for mock exams on top of that.

£120 is insane. Go direct to a tutor. Dont use an agency.

bombaychef · 08/12/2019 23:30

£120 an hour has to be a mistake. The going rate is £25/30

Pipandmum · 08/12/2019 23:35

I paid £25/hour for GCSE tutor.

Ceje39 · 08/12/2019 23:47

I can't believe the difference in prices mentioned above.

The agency came back to me with the name of a tutor, a bio and the cost with VAT in brackets, stressing his experience. I went back and said it was unaffordable for us.

I live in South East London (probably near you OP) and there’s not a single tutor in these parts for under £40/hr. A good one is £60-80/hr, agency ones more expensive. I wonder where everyone’s finding such low priced tutors in London from Hmm

xyzandabc · 08/12/2019 23:55

Last year in Bucks we paid £27p/h. That was once a week term time only and she provided all the books etc.

£120 p/h is bonkers, is there any way it could be a typo?

XelaM · 09/12/2019 00:06

I'm in North London and my daughter is currently in year 5. We have 2 different tutors for the 11+ (with super success rates) and both charge £35 per hour for a 1:1 session and one of them does a small group session (4 kids in th group) at £35 for two hours. PM me if you want me to recommend them, but we are in North London

organiccoffee · 09/12/2019 09:17

there is a huge difference in prices for different area. For London, 40-50 ph is really common, and expericed ones charge 60-80. I don't know how much the agents take from the tutors, 10-20%? then VAT is added on if you have to hire from agent. If you speak directly to the tutor, you can save the VAT part. 120 is EXPENSIVE, but no impossible for London.

Dodgeitornot · 09/12/2019 13:14

Oh gosh, definately look on local advert boards, gumtree and places like tutorful. Yes they can get expensive but I don't know anyone in London spending more than £40 ph. Most people spend around £30.

Ceje39 · 09/12/2019 19:20

I sent an email to the agency saying it wasn’t affordable for us - this is what was said.

“Our home tutors in London are typically at least £100 an hour but I may be able to find you online tutor options from £80.”

Tell him to get lost, that's ridiculous. Their client base must be some Belgravia oligarchs.
