Anyone know of a good app my 12 year old son and I could do together that can help with mental arithmetic and times tables? Preferably fun and free!

Khan academy is good - it's pretty straight-up mini maths lessons plus practice, no babyish cartoons etc. Covers the basics right up to higher levels of secondary maths.

Alternatively, the kumon maths books give plenty of repetitive exercises and are clearly laid out.

Schofield & Sums do Mental Maths practice books which are a bit more interesting, but just lots of progressive practice. In my experience, this kind of thing is better for practice than apps, as easier to encourage writing down some working out if it's on paper rather than on screen.

If you want more 'fun', I recommend the sumdog app

Squeebles - aimed at younger children but still good for mental arithmetic
