Is it a state school or independent? I would definitely address it to the Head.

I do it regularly as we go abroad a lot to dh.
Polite thing is to ask permission stating reason why then say you recognize importance of consistency and routine and will of course complete any work given by school during period away.

Policy in our school is to send a letter to the Head Teacher, then she send one back saying she won't authorise it and warns us that the Child Welfare Office may call!

MaureenMLove · 16/05/2007 23:25

Do you think you are going to have a problem then? If so, there's probably not much point in going into detail.

Er No! Just primary! She is such a witch! In the past, when you were allowed 10 days, if you wanted even as much as one extra day, she would not allow it, but 'invite' you to write to the Chair of Governors! Trouble is, this is all about stats for the school and she is hanging herself, because her stats say she has loads unauthorized absences!

Our primary school (and the one where I work also) have the same policy as MaureenMLove.

I am taking my 3 primary kids out a week before the end of term.

I wrote a letter, giving the dates and reason (family obligation in the USA). I received the confirmation back from the headteacher, which happened to be on a tear off slip of a form letter - therefore, the school actually has form letters for this kind of thing.

I did not grovel in my letter - just wrote it in such a way that I would be taking them out.
