LJG was the grandaughter of Henry VIII's sister Mary and Charles Brandon Duke of Suffolk. She was married, apparently against her will to Guilford Dudley, son of the Duke of Northumberland who had replaced Edward VI's uncle as his guardian. Northumberland pesuaded Edward to set aside Henry VIII's Act of succession which had named Mary I as the next heir,but Edward died before this could be confirmed by Parliament, which would have been necessry to make it legal. Northumberland proclaimed LJG queeen anyway, but there was never much support for her & Mary easily won back the crown. At first she was only imprisoned, but when there was a rising in Kent against Mary's marriage to Philip of Spain, Mary decided it was too dangerous to let her live.
