Hi, anyone willing to give an opinion on this school? Thinking of sending my 2 boys there when we move next year...thanks.

I don't have children at this school, but I live in the area. It has a good reputation among families with children with dyslexia, although I believe they cater to children of all abilities.

Thanks Missinglalaland

Friends sent their boy there in preparation for Bancroft where he got in at 7+ with no extra tutoring. They said the facilities were not the best but the classes are small and teaching was good. The school obviously don't like exits at 7+ and the boy was offered a scholarship to remain.

Thanks Frogusha. Yes I saw the policy for staying past 7. I am not too worried about academic results, more whether it is a school with a nice atmosphere. As we are moving to the area with no friends locally I want to feel sure the children will settle and make friends. Was there a nice social side or are most kids there for breakfast club and after school club with not much mixing outside school?

Red, I've asked - the friend doesn't recall about the breakfast club as it was 5 years ago or so but said since it's a small school it wouldn't be a big breakfast club. The boy did do extracurricular clubs though like chess. The social side was good, other children were local, he made good friends to play after school but commented that Asian and white children (or their parents more likely) don't tend to socialise much outside of school which results in a narrower pool of friends. But they were happy with the social side he did get and the academics. Also, he mentioned boys seemed to play more outside of school than girls.

Thank you so much for taking the time to get your friends opinion Frogusha - appreciated!

@RedIsBest hi, I am jumping on an old thread, Did you go with Avon House in the end? We planning to move to the area and considering sending our son and daughter there. thanks!

RedIsBest · 16/06/2020 09:05

Sorry we didn't send the kids to Avon House in the end as they were offered places at another school we preferred.

Although this is an old post, I thought it would be a good platform to voice an opinion given the school have turned their Reviews off on Google (which is very telling in itself). My two nephews and my cousin's son attend this school and I have seen nothing but negligent, unprofessional and incompetent behaviour from staff. There have been serious injuries, breach of conduct and bullying take place at the school with no serious consequences or action taken. There are other behaviours that I have observed, but these are very sensitive issues and it is not my place to say. This is a toxic environment, some have even had their children removed from the school when speaking up against the issues which puts unhappy parents in a difficult spot. I would not recommend this school, there are other fantastic schools in the area.

Really disgusting behaviour from the Headmistress who had no consideration for the children. We attended and wanted to leave. As soon as we served notice they terminated the contract prematurely and gave only two days for my child to say goodbye to his friends. I find it ridiculous how they can still operate - they should be closed.

Anyone else had poor experience with Avon House Preparatory School. They have turned off Google reviews and not letting parents voice their concerns….
