Can I ask secondary teachers a question about GCSE moderation time at your school please?

Just wondering, how internal moderating in your school works. In particular the arts. Do you get taken off timetable to do it and how many of you are involved and over how many days?

I know how it works at my school, but wondered if it was the norm. We have 3 subjects in the Arts. Photography, Fine Art and Textiles. Each subject has 3 groups, so around 60 projects to moderate in each.

Bump, just in case anyone might be able to help!

We do ours after school so in allocated meeting time (next week actually) but this is just a sample, we don't have to moderate 60 items. This is MFL btw.

I'm not Art but Computer Science but we had one INSET day back in March to moderate. The CAs weren't quite finished but we each took each other's pupils'work to mark and then compare, for Year 11 and 13

Not working in the classroom any more (I actually do moderate for an exam board, though) but moderation (arts subject) was always in our own time. We sometimes used to meet up over the weekend and take a big chunk of time, or a few evenings after school.

One of our CPD days is used for standardising. No children. All departments standardise/do exam admin or training if not cwk. Will be reviewed as cwk bites the dust.

Time off timetable? No such luck. All done in allocated meeting time. Everyone teaching GCSE involved.

Do you mean external moderation?

Resistant Materials and Graphics, all moderation done after school in own time.

Time off timetable?! Not a hope...

Science - Internal moderation done on INSET day and then after school as required (if last minute CAs completed).

Sorry, saw that you said internal in your OP! I thought you meant when the external person comes in and looks at the work, which is obviously less flexible than internal moderation for postal external moderation.

Thanks all. We are an arts specialist school and it seems they get all the luck! So from March onwards there are constantly Art teachers off timetable for either supporting in the exams, moderating internally or some of them moderating at other schools!

I counted the hours of missed teaching by one of the art teachers yesterday, for just art exams and he was up to 17! Add in the A levels next week, the moderating for GCSE and A level and that'll take him to what amounts to at least a week off timetable!

It just seems so unfair! English have far, far more to do, but they arrange it n their non contact hours or take it home!

I'm going to take this to the table next week I think. The SLT English teacher is very interested to hear what MN said! He said there's always a few choice words for the Arts when they're up to their necks in essay marking!
