Just for Popsycal

How did everyone do? Teachers how did your classes perform?

Query about yr 3 optional sats - are they 'smoothed' for age or are they based on raw score. I'm a bit worried as dd1 got 3a & 3c for reading & writing, but only 2a for maths (which she got on yr 2 sats). She also does county tests where she came out as 'high average' but I know these are smoothed for age as she got a higher raw score than bf, but a lower mark (she's October birthday btw).
Anyway, on a positive note, she has done brilliantly to bring her writing up to 3c, as believe she may be slightly dyslexic, so it could just be that she has been concentrating on this instead of her maths.
DD2 got 2 sa & a 3 btw - could have gone either way (teachers said she could get all 1's if she decided she couldn't be bothered)

I thought at KS1 a, b, c grading was only up to level 2a if a KS1 child gets a level 3 it isn't broken down into a, b & c.

Its optional sats in yr3 when the level 3 is broken down. Anyway, any teachers out there who can tell me whether you should compare yr2 sats & yr3 sats results?

marthamoo · 12/07/2004 17:02

Ds1 got 3s in everything. And 3A's in his teacher assessments. AND he had a dummy 'til he was three....

marthamoo · 12/07/2004 17:04

Maybe his teacher assessments were 2A's then, jampot? Can you tell I don't place too much store on SATS results?

jampot · 12/07/2004 18:51

Finally - dd achieved level 5's for everything but she is absolutely gutted that her "teacher assessment" was level 5 and not 6 after all her teacher's pushing earlier this term... her friend's assessment was 6! So now teachers are level 5's broken down to a, b & c?

berries - in theory a level is a level is a level, so it shouldn't matter at which year or key stage the level is achieved, they should be comparable. It is important to remember that a high average child makes 2/3 of a level progress in one year, so if your child was 2a at the end of Y2, it would be normal if they achieved 3c or 3b at the end of Y3. Nationally children only make 1 1/2 levels of progress over 4 years, so the year on year change can seem small, but it means that a lot of invaluable consolidation is taking place

Allatsea - thanks for that. It would appear that she has made no progress at all in maths this year However, I know from when she was little she tends to stand still in one area when she is concentrating on others. Guess we'll just have to concentrate on maths this year!
PS congrats to all those whose kids got good results

VERY VERY VERY PROUD MUM ALERT [GRIN][GRIN][GRIN]

ok, so you need a bit of background! In the past two years my 11 yr old ds , has seen his Mum and Dad split up, has moved house four times and has been introduced to my new partner who he really likes but it was still a big change for him. I have had spells of going into school every day to see his teacher becasue of his attitude problem and lack of motiviation.

but, I went in to see his teacher and get his results and he got 2 4's and a 5 and I cried as I was so so proud of him, His teacher said that the turnaround has been remarkable!
woohoo!! woohoo!!

And in an hour I go and get my 7 year olds results, but he is more of a happy go lucky type who doesn't really have to put the effort in that his big brother does, and has been much more prgmatic and laid back about the changes in out life in the past two years.

Watch this space!

Well Done lilibets ds
Yes popsy I would still to know about the perscentages if you can help??
My ds got 77% for English. 98% for maths and 73Out of 80 for science which is about 90%.
I did not know you could get a b or c for level 5.
I assume the maths and science would be high level 5 but ehat about the english?

charlize · 13/07/2004 22:19

Also popsy do you think the maths exam was easier this yr??
A lot of my ds class got above 95% . He is normally ahead in this by quite a lot but the bight kids whom maths is not their best subject seemed to fly through it.
Unlike the 11plus where tge maths paper was very challenging thus enabling my ds to have an advantage, he scored 90% but the other bright kids where a good 20 marks behind. Its a shame he lost this advantage and only ended up 3rd in class. Whereas with the 11 plus he came 1st out of 200.

Posey · 14/07/2004 00:13

Yet another proud mum alert, and also reassurance for all of you with "young" ones in the school year.
Dd is in a year of 50+ children split over 2 classes (yr 2). She was one of only 4 children to get all level 3's. 2 of them are Autumn birthdays, Dd and another girl were still 6 when they took SATs (dd turned 7 last week).

So apart from being REALLY proud of her, it just shows that when you are born doesn't have to have a detrimental affect on your learning.

popsycal · 14/07/2004 12:11

chalrize - you dont get issued with a b or c sub levels but the school often work it out to give a clearer picture...i will find you the link for the level threshlds in a miniute...

popsycal · 14/07/2004 12:20

this is the link for the level threasholds but as you will see, it is unreadable......

popsycal · 14/07/2004 12:23

Charlize.....
73/80 for science is a 5B or 5a (we gave it a 5b) - a middle level 5 - the 4/5 border this year was 61/80 - your ds did very well!

77% is a 5 - the 4/5 border for english was 65%
so a 5c probably
98% for maths is obviously a 5a....

tigermoth · 14/07/2004 13:02

lilibet, many congratulatione to your son - your message is very heartwarming.
