Head of PISA warns DfE that budget cuts will harm education standards

"It's a value choice of societies to make. Education really is an important choice; that is the future.
"The school system today is your economy tomorrow, and that is something I worry about when governments have an attitude of. 'Oh well, let's cut some corners here'."

And yet the DfE continues to insist that there aren't budget cuts, there isn't a problem with teacher recruitment and retention and that everything is just fine and dandy (while finding £millions for new grammar schools that have no support from anyone working in education).

And there will still be hand wringing when we don't do too well in the next round of PISA tests. Because no-one really seems to be talking about the fact that under-investment in all sorts of areas of public service is now having a real impact. But apparently my children will still be expected to jump through ever increasing hoops to show that education reforms are paying off, at the same time as their school runs out of printer paper on a regular basis and increasingly lacks subject specialists to cover all lessons.
