If all Yr 7s have to re-sit SATs if failed in Yr6, will a privately educated pupil who didn't sit them have to do them in Yr 7?

Just this really.

DS is at an independent school which don't do SATs and will be one of the few going to a state school in Sept.

I know that any Yr 7s who failed their Year 6 SATS will have to re-take.....so will my DS who has never done them have to sit them at the end of Yr 7 too?

His independent school follow the NC broadly but the focus is more on preparing for entrance exams to the private sector, so some of the areas that SATS cover may not get so much focus.

My ynderstanding as a Y6 teacher is that yes they would have to sit them, as Schools will use this as the main basis for their GCSE predictions.

The answer is no one knows. The government promised a consultation on how these Y7 resits will be administered which was supposed to come out in September but there's been nothing about it. In addition, headteachers are organising to boycott next year's KS2 SATs if they continue in their current format so even state school students might not be sitting them.

Basically wait and see. Fingers crossed that the government drops the whole sorry plan.

What happens if the Year7 students fail them a second time?

I think the plan was that they would resit them again in the summer.

Schools would be penalised if they failed to get students to pass a test in 3 months of preparation that primaries couldn't get them to pass in 7 years. 3 months in which the student would be going through a huge transition period.

I'm hoping they will forget the daft plan.

My DD2 is in y7 having only reached 'required standard' in one area. If she was having to spend time cramming for maths and grammar (and writing assessments?) rather than playing the long 5 year secondary game then it would be terrible for her. As it is, she has settled well, and is even starting to gain confidence in maths as she is being given stuff she can do rather than stuff she can't.

I have never heard of this happening. Our school doesn't set at all in year 7

Nermerner the plan from the government was that from next academic year, y6s not meeting required standard would have to resit in y7. But no details yet, so they might (hopefully) forget all about it.

I'm very interested in this. A number of our students come from independent sector without SATs. Nobody could give me an answer when I've asked.

They wouldn't know at secondary. The announcements earlier in the year suggested it would happen from next year's year 7 entry.

I have a yr7 who has come from private school, I guess it doesn't apply to him yet.

School (comp) set their own CAT test for setting, not sure how they do GCSE predicted grades.

My older DS (y9) also went from private to comp, and the school predicted his levels to be 7a by the end of y9 across the board, not sure how they got that idea , or how they'll translate this to predicted grade later (as an immigrant, I am learning on the job MN is a goldmine of info!)

UPDATE on news today, the government have sensibly decided not to go ahead with SATs retakes. Yay!

Having been through this, I can only suggest you don't worry too much. When we went into the state sector, the grades were made up on the fly, based on post code as far as I could work out. Blow all to do with actual performance or ability, like most education statistics. If it says FFT, ignore it!
