what's to be done about shoddy spelling/gammar in educational publications?

just found "can not" in dd's example Sat paper, produced by the QCA. DH just smiled and said "It's a maths paper". But it's really not acceptable is it? I found somthing similar in one of her reading books once - I emailed the publishers but they've never had the decency to get back to me. I just don't understand how it happens.

Am I missing something here? "Can not" is fine, isn't it?

I think all you can do is let them know - email them. Sometimes things slip through the copy readers but you'd hope they wouldn't! Think it's poor that the publishers didn't acknowledge your mail.

I always put spelling mistakes in, they're deliberate, just to test you . but I'm posting on mn in 2 minutes, not writing a bloody leaflet thing to be distributed to thousands of schools and seen by millions of kids.

fox - no need to worry - the said thing was sent home as optional christmas holiday homework. I hadn;t even realised what it was until spotting the mistake led me to read the small print on the back page. please note dd1 did precisely zero. zilch. nadda. of this optional homework.

I for one hate poor grammar and spelling, even the fishy one is not exempt

"Can not" is not incorrect!

NotQuiteCockney · 13/01/2007 14:28

Oh, thank you Feenie, I am quite confused by this.

NotQuiteCockney · 13/01/2007 14:30

Here is a British page saying "can not" is fine. Yes, "cannot" is more usual, but "can not" is not incorrect.
