dd has had a bad cold all week, sleeping really badly. She has been insisting on going to school, and has been there all week. She came out of school complaining of stomach cramps yesterday, and her teacher said she had not been herself all day. She is now, not talking to me as I have insistd she stay at home today. How do reason with a child that is nearly five?

Let her have her favourite dvd on or read her a favourite book and cuddle up with her on the sofa for an hour. Thats should make her feel better

Got her duvet on the sofa and Aladdin on the telly, I have even tried bribing with biscuits.

I think you just have to decide if they're okay or not and stand by your decision! I have a 7 year old that has gone to school all week with a sore throat and general under the weather-ness and when I suggested she stayed at home she said "but I have a times tables test, I have to be there" or "I'll miss my spelling test". Didn't have the heart to discourage her enthusiasm but she's really not well today so I've kept her off (which meant I had to call in sick myself!). The kids are never ill on my days off!

put on her fave music and start dancing around the living room she wont be able to resist!

julia, if i suggested to my DS2 that he wasn't well enough to go to school he would agree and be back in bed like a shot in case i changed my mind. he would however be back out again once he thought it was safe!

Tell her that schneebly from mumsnet went to school when she felt ill one time and collapsed on the way home and had to go away in an ambulance! Actually no dont tell her that but it is a true story! It was halloween party and I didnt want to miss it and I had a huge asthma attack! I would just say to her that you really dont want her to get worse or she might need even longer off from school. She needs to rest today and over the weekend so she is fit and healthy for Monday.

What is she doing at school atm - maybe its something she really wants to do - maybe a compromise of doing a little work at home on the same subject might persuade her to stay

who ever invented sticker books, should get the noble peace prize. We have finally reached an agreement thanks to an Angelina ballerina sticker book.

Agree with terramum - I'm about to give DD a times tables test because she's been learning them all week and will miss her test today at school as she's not well. A tables test is my idea of hell but she's dead keen so who am I to argue?!!!
