Can you tell me yours please, either as a parent, or as someone who went through Welsh medium as a pupil yourself? Thanks

About 90% of my classmates' parents didn't speak Welsh themselves. Was fine, school results were very good. Also a lot of social activities, way more than peers in English medium schools, which was very helpful for me as a socially inept teen and gave me the opportunity to take responsibility for looking after younger kids (organising activities, helping with trips, etc). Obviously this may vary with school. Think Welsh medium in Cardiff is different to Welsh medium in Caernarfon.

It does depend on which region you are in.

It wasn't an issue for me, my parents weren't the type to sit down and help us with homework anyway.
By A level, I was taught all subjects in English despite being in Welsh medium ed, because of the Exam boards

My mum and dad flipped when they wanted to teach me Maths in Welsh and wouldn't allow it.

In Cardiff you definitely wouldn't be in the minority with not speaking Welsh at home.

I find it very hard why to see why one would contemplate this. Would totally cut one off from one's child education. And what is the point?

Millymollymama · 12/05/2015 00:09

Some children find being bilingual difficult and it slows their learning. Personally I would not contemplate it because Welsh is such minority language, but I do recognise some people want to keep it alive. However Welsh children's' attainment at school is lower than English children's' attainment I understand. The Welsh language requirement might be a factor in this because some children from non Welsh speaking families find it hard.
