Areas to live near Brentford with decent schools?

Hi
Dh has been offered a job in Brentford and we are considering whether it's a good move for us or not. DD is 8 and dS 4 so availability of good schools would be important. We are from Ireland so have no local knowledge at all. Can anyone suggest nice areas that would be within commutable distance from Brentford?

We would be renting initially and budget about 1700 for a 3 bed.

I live a mile up the road in Ealing and would say that Brentford is ok, loads of development going on but Ealing is nicer. Look for houses in Northfields and South Ealing.

But there is massive pressure on school places in this part of London, most of the schools are good but you may have difficulty getting both kids into your preferred choice. However there is a fair out of movement so you might get lucky.

Thanks motherships I keep reading about all the pressure on schools in this area and surrounding and its freaking me out a bit. It's a really great opportunity for dh but it's so hard to know what to do when we haven't a clue about the area. I will have a look at Ealing thou.

There are several houses in your price range on Right move in Twickenham. Nice area good schools but a lot of pressure on places. No bad primaries. Journey although short in a car to Brentford could be a solid traffic jam at certain times of the day. Easy bike ride though. Isleworth/ Brentford have couple of good girls secondaries. Green school c of e and Gumley house catholic if you are staying for a while.

Thanks mary21 will check Twickenham out too. If we do move we would be hoping it will be a long term move so good to know about secondaries as well. Do you start secondary at 11 in England?

Yes, secondary starts at 11 here too. As Mary pointed out you'll get much more choice if you practice a religion of some sort.

It's really hard house hunting in an area you don't know, especially in London where just being a street or 2 over can make all the difference. Would you prefer to be as close as possible to Brentford or would you prefer to be further out?

Will you get any help with moving costs?

Mothershipg yesterday evening we were recommended a number of places in Surrey from the company as the office is split between Brentford and sunbury: addlestone, ash ford, Guildford, Woking, Wokingham, shepperton, chertsey, twickenham..have been looking at them all and there are houses within are budget and schools with good reports in all the areas but like you say it's so hard to know!

We will get some moving costs and probably a few trips to look around the areas but I read another thread talking about the school places nightmare in Surrey so I'm not feeling optimistic about getting preferred schools.

We are Catholic but daughter currently attends non-Dom school so happy with either option.

Any opinions on these areas would be greatly appreciated??

We're in greenford and I used to work in Brentford, not a bad commute both by bus and by car. Schools are a bit hit and miss but I think that's most of London tbh

Egham would be a good place. It is a fantastic community with a direct train service to Brentford (Waterloo to Weybridge line via Hounslow). There is the outstanding catholic primary, St Cuthberts, followed by Salesian in Chertsey.

You will definitely get more for your money out in Surrey.

The only thing I will say is parts of Twickenham are lovely but watch out for areas close to the stadium as they can get very jammed up on match days.

Twickenham is very accessible by car for both Sunbury and Brentford.
ALL the primaries are good
some very good secondaries if you are fairly central Twickenham including
St Richard Reynolds Catholic Primary & Secondary
Gumley House in Isleworth (girls catholic secondary)
Orleans Park
But yes keep away from the rugby ground - which is the Whitton end of Twickenham.

I wouldn't necessarily avoid the rugby ground area, there aren't generally that many matches - though it's true to say this year will be a bit grim with the World Cup.

seriously? There are LOTS of matches. Whole saturdays of lock down.

Not to mention concerts, Jehovah Witness Festivals - all bring that area to a complete standstill.

Hanwell is good. 10 mins from brentford- 3 excellent primary schools- Hobbayne, St Marks and Oaklands and a great secondary (Drayton Manor- recently written up in a The Telegraph state school thingy, headmaster knighted etc...). Housing less expensive than other parts of Ealing due to no tube, but there is a train to paddington and it will get crossrail soon.

Chertsey - St Ann's primary then Salesian for secondary are both Catholic schools and commutable to Sunbury and Brentford

Hey i live in brentford, love the area..moved to this area actually because schools around here are good. Kew bridge is also nice but more expensive.. Brentford is growing so much and redeveloping

Look along the Southwest Trains line out from Brentford.
Ashford has an outstanding RC primary (St Michael) and several other good primaries. St Michael feeds into St Pauls Sunbury for secondary, and some children go to the Hounslow RC secondaries St Marks, Gumley House and Gunnersbury. For Salesian you need to be in one of its feeders or live close by.
