Hi I'm trying not to get too stressed, living in a grammar school catchment.10 mins walk from the grammar got to try the 11+

It's hard getting a 10 yr old to do extra study, I'm using Bond sample test maths papers. Every day just trying about 30 mins work.

Anyone got ideas on how not to end up having ds hating me?

I tried a tutor.
Instead of getting stressed ourselves , somebody else shared my stress.
My tutor was charging £25 for two hrs.
And we got a success.

A good way to get them working without it feeling too much like work is free online flash games. There is a good list of them here femketuition.co.uk/flash-games-maths/ and I'm sure you can find more elsewhere.

30 mins per day is quite a lot of prep IMO.

Both our DCs passed the 11+ just doing approx. 1.5 hours prep per week. They both got scores well above the pass threshold.

For them, their incentive was wanting to go to the same school as most of their friends and being to catch the bus with them etc.

Plus they'd had some experience of our local comp and some of its pupils and they most definitely didn't want to end up there.

You can't get an A* in the 11+. You get a numerical score. Here the pass mark is 220 but you need a score above that to comfortably guarantee your place.

I also agree that the 11+ exam tests for ability AND speed. Many children could probably pass the 11+ given all day to work through the questions.

But the test only allows 30 secs per question. It is this which makes it beyond the reach of 75% of children to pass. You have to have the natural ability coupled with accuracy and speed.

If they can pass it then they will fare well at a grammar where very few allowances are made for children who need something explaining more than once, and where little sympathy is given to stragglers.
