Today's challenge - help dd1 find the meanings of charges(animals) on shields! (pretty please)

Dd1 is designing herself a shield and is trying to find out what all the different animals symbolise. We know a Griffin means "daring" and we think a lion and an eagle mean "courage" but we can't find out any of the others! Lots of sites on heraldry but none with the meanings, just lists of animals (charges) commonly used.

Puuuurrleeease help us out ... (even dd2 watched us struggling and said "why don't you just ask mumsnet?" )
