and dd got offered a 'good' (music) scholarship. i am so proud. i'd like to stick my fingers up at a tutor i chatted to once who laughed when i said dd was going to go for the music scholarship when i told her that she wasn't/hadn't done any of the things that she (the tutor lady) said dd would have to do in order to have any chance of success. so my message is simple. if your child works hard and wants something enough and would appear to be half decent at it, it is possible to achieve a good result without being totured or jumping through the hot housed hoops that you apparently have to jump through in order to stand any chance. good luck to anyone else out there who is waiting for some entrance exam results

thanks! she plays piano (currently learning grade 6) and violin (soon to take grade 4). she also sings, tbh i think her singing may have contributed but don't know for sure. part of me isn't surprised but a large part of me is as she didn't tick all the boxes as to what i thought you would need/have done to qualify. i hope my post gives hope to others like me who don't go in for the tutoring etc. we were told that for her to stand any chance of a music scholarship she would have to have performed for a few years with an orchestra etc etc. i think it must also have alot to do with what they are looking for. i know they don't necessarily look for a higher grade, sometimes more for the attitude etc of the pupil. fwiw a friend of mine whose sone is, i think, at grade 4 piano also just got offered a scholarship (music) to the same school!! neither of us can believe it. best of luck (if you are in the same position)

So happy for your dd! Grade 6 and grade 4 at 11 years old sounds pretty amazing to me. So glad you seized your opportunity and took a chance!

As I said on the other thread, well done to your DD winter! You are probably a very proud mum at the moment!

Congratulations to her. She obviously loves her music and has a spark and passion for it which will stand her in good stead. Wish my DD had been so lucky at her first choice school this time last year! We had to turn down her music scholarship offer because the school was just a bit too far away and, ironically, with all the travelling she would have had far less time to practise!! Now at a fab school close to home with wonderful musical opportunities anyway, but sadly (for us who pay the fees) no scholarship status at this one.

schmedz must have been hard turning down a scholarship offer. tbh i didn't think she would be offered one as she doesn't really fit the profile of what i have constantly been told by other mothers. dh and i took forgranted that if she was offered one, that it would be 15% which we would have had to turn down as we really couldn't have made up the difference. can't believe she has been offered 30%. we can't turn that down although will be really broke for years now. i don't mind living off tinned beans/soupls for 7 years . i don't drink or smoke, we rarely go out so not much room to cut back......i'm not giving up cake!!
