Queen Ethelburga's Harrogate anyone?

We just had another prospectus brought home from DD's state primary for QE. The idea is quite appealing but not within our budget. It seems very expensive but mentions possibility of discounts through various bursary's and scholarships. Does anyone have any experience of this? Is the school to be recommended? (middle and high school age)

I know Bilton well, we lived on the Regents when we moved back to Harrogate a few years ago. DD1 went to Woodfield school for 3 years and I was really impressed by it.

TessTing · 01/02/2014 20:04

Thanks again, so much to think about. Can I ask about Hampsthwaite?

I love Hampsthwaite and all the villages around that side of Harrogate. I know when I went to HGS, that there were loads of kids that came from Hampsthwaite, Darley and Dacre but I'm sure that the school is much more popular now.

endlesstidying · 01/02/2014 22:04

We had some kind of leaflet from them last year.

We live in the West Midlands and DD was 7 Hmm If they are so desperate that they have to send out marketing informaton on spec then I seriously question what people are saying about the because they're clearly not getting many pupils through word of mouth.

dd's at a private school. They run the odd discrete advert in local magazines and newspapers which cover no more than half a page usually once a year. As far as I know they certainly don't send out a prospectus unless its requested. They don't need to. They're full with a waiting list

TalkinPeace · 07/02/2014 12:38

So, which pub shall we all meet at before the Libel court action?

AgaPanthers · 07/02/2014 13:24

When I was at school in Harrogate, HGS, St Aidans and St John Fisher were all naice, and the religious schools naicer than HGS, because of the religious selection.

Rossett and, worse Granby (now Harrogate High), both rather rough from my vantage point, but growing up in Harrogate that was probably a rather sheltered one....

Harrogate Ladies and the like always seemed like some sort of joke.

Leeds Grammar much better than anything in Harrogate of course.

meditrina · 07/02/2014 13:32

Why the sudden mention of libel?

Faverolles · 07/02/2014 13:38

There may have been a few emails from MNHQ winging around meditrina.

meditrina · 07/02/2014 14:10

I have asked for my post of Friday 31 January 2014 13:59 to be deleted.

It contained a reference to an earlier deleted thread and was intended to refer only to items discussed in that thread. It was based on my recollection of something which cannot now be demonstrated one way or the other.

The first bit, which was an answer to NigellasDealer had not been drawn to my attention as problematic, so I repeat it here.

"The thread's gone, I don't remember the exact dynamics, but there was something girl specific, because it was a DD I was meant to have been embittered about Grin"

MNHQ if any of this post causes you a problem, please email again.

AgaPanthers · 07/02/2014 14:18

I haven't yet said anything rude about Queen Ethelburgers in this thread, but I will retract all the things I haven't said, just in case they wanted to pre-emptively sue.

Living · 07/02/2014 14:57

Have you considered Gateways for private school options? My friend teaches in the area and was raving about it for pastoral support.

Hobnobissupersweet · 07/02/2014 15:06

Can I join you for a glass of wine before we go to court Grin Wine

TalkinPeace · 07/02/2014 15:35

I shall not be having my comment deleted.

My defence was going to be along the lines of Section 3 of the Act
but the actions of the people in question show that in fact, I could probably get away with arguing Section 2.

I use this name all over the web and have done so for many, many years.
I am often rude about people and organisations.
If they are so fragile that they feel the need to take legal action, that says a great deal more about them than it does me.

I have taken a backup copy of this thread to show to my tame solicitor should the need arise.
Grin Wine

TalkinPeace · 07/02/2014 15:41

Just for the reference of all those feeling rather stressed about the emails from MNHQ, they had no choice but to contact us.

But if you read Section 1 of the Act
www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2013/26/section/1/enacted
I'll be watching closely to see how this pans out.

Faverolles · 07/02/2014 16:13

I've asked for my comment to be deleted, but I do think that it's weird that they'll go to such lengths to hide the negative rumours.

Op, if you go a little north from Harrogate, there are two excellent schools in Ripon - the grammar school and Outwood academy.

BettyBotter · 07/02/2014 17:23

How very strange Confused

Apparently my post in which I ask for bets on how quickly the thread will be taken down and do not comment in any way either positively or negatively on QE is defamatory.

So they are asking me to take it down. Hmm

And yes, I'll expect a new message from their lawyer forthwith.

a bit more than 2 hours 17 minutes but as noone joined in my guessing game anyway I declare myself the winner!

Shootingatpigeons · 07/02/2014 18:45

If I were them I would prefer what I wrote to a deleted post, with all that implies, that leaves parent's imaginations to run riot, but there you go but mines a white Wine talkin Cheers

However as others have said most local families would be looking at Grammar School at Leeds, Harrogate Grammar, st John Fisher, St Aidens Ripon Grammar.........

reddidi · 07/02/2014 19:59

Oooo, are they trying to become TSWMNBN? I feel a fact-finding urge coming on...

happygardening · 07/02/2014 20:25

TSWMNBN? I'm crap at acronyms what does that mean or is it a defamatory acronym?

reddidi · 07/02/2014 20:28

She Who Must Not Be Named is part of Mumsnet history.

TalkinPeace · 07/02/2014 21:08

reddidi
I arrived on MN after that ...
but

in the time I've been on the boards
lots of threads all over name specific schools
often in a singularly uncomplimentary manner
BUT
to my awareness, only one school routinely calls in the lawyers

and its NOT a school that people are trying to get into

which implies they are genuinely worried that even the smallest MN threat could tip the balance of their admissions
which is rather sad on their part

but will have no effect on my attitude to posting on such issues
