Queen Ethelburga's Harrogate anyone?

We just had another prospectus brought home from DD's state primary for QE. The idea is quite appealing but not within our budget. It seems very expensive but mentions possibility of discounts through various bursary's and scholarships. Does anyone have any experience of this? Is the school to be recommended? (middle and high school age)

I do not think is thread is the place for allegations by posters claiming to be former members of staff.

And I hope they do cause the thread to be deleted, as the unfolding of the threats of legal action are, I think, and important part of MN history and should remain available.

TalkinPeace · 15/10/2014 21:30

Meditrina
Having just done an advanced search on howstheserenity
because it is important that this thread stays put
she has mentioned being a housemistress at the school several times over several years on various threads so scarily enough it might be true.

howstheserenity if you are confabulating, could you have your post pulled as this thread is important for many reasons - not least as a case study impact of the defamation act.

Whitetree · 15/10/2014 22:26

TalkingPeace

I believe that HowsTheSerenity is telling the truth, since she is capable of going to so much details(kept a photo as an evidence). If those allegations are true, nothing to worry about the defamation act.

HowsTheSerenity · 15/10/2014 23:17

Hi
I had my comment deleted.
After some research I've seen that a lot has happened re QE. I would not want to jeopardise anything.
However, for the non believers, I did work there. I can post photos of the great hall, the stuffed leopards, the many unused televisions etc.

iseenodust · 16/10/2014 10:18

Am I the first to catch the Queen Ethelburga's TV ad ? Is this the end of the DVD's dropping through the door?

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 16/10/2014 11:37

A school that thinks it's going to be cost-effective to advertise on TV? A school that needs to do that? Good grief.

listsandbudgets · 18/10/2014 22:48

Are my eyes deceiving me or having threatend to sue mumsnet posters are they now advertising on it?

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 18/10/2014 22:51

They advertise on local radio too: I heard it at the hairdressers.

(She said, thinking surely that is not in any way libellous Hmm)

BerylStreep · 19/10/2014 14:15

Listsandbudgets - are you sure it isn't pop ups from searches you may have done?

listsandbudgets · 19/10/2014 17:05

Don't think so Beryl changed lap top recently and have never searched for st. Etelburgas on this one. perhaps it was a product of my over active imagination Grin

BTEC could well harm students:

by raising expectations of success with BTECs

by under-equipping students for university work and the harsh world of exams

by setting up students to fail at university

TalkinPeace · 09/11/2014 16:58

What has that article got to do with QE?
( its behind a paywall so I cannot read it )
BTECs are excellent qualifications for the appropriate students.

NessaYork · 15/11/2014 12:58

Too many deleted entries.
Too many entire threads about QE deleted.
I smell a rat, or at the very least a lack of transparency. Is this the auctioning of 'the right to be forgotten' that I've read about elsewhere?
I could not honestly recommend an education at QE's to anybody; not even my worst enemy, or Dick Cheney himself.

happygardening · 15/11/2014 17:38

Be careful Nessa the legal dept at QE is very quick to respond to negative comments.

TalkinPeace- above table answered your question!

susann · 20/11/2014 11:55

There's a great independently written review on QE here: www.goodschoolsguide.co.uk/schools/102042/queen-ethelburga-s-college

TalkinPeace · 20/11/2014 12:32

susann
Indeed there may be but its behind a pay wall and you appear to work for the Good Schools guide.

Whitetree · 23/11/2014 21:23

TalkinPeace - from the above table, you can estimate that over 50% of Sixthform courses taken by QE students were BTECs!

TalkinPeace · 23/11/2014 21:40

Whitetree
with a bit of digging there is also the cracker that a lot of the GCSE A*s are MFL in the pupils other languages Grin

iseenodust · 24/11/2014 13:34

QE placed 1st in Yorkshire in Sunday Times independent schools table yesterday.Hmm

TalkinPeace · 24/11/2014 15:26

Based on what data?
As the 2014 data set does not come out till January
What are the Sunday Times criteria?
Were there perchance adverts for QE elsewhere in that section of the paper Wink?

Whitetree · 24/11/2014 22:09

iseenodust- by taking out BTECs and MFL in the pupils own languages, QE would be placed bottom 1st in Yorkshire.

iseenodust · 24/11/2014 22:19

Based on 2014 exam results - A levels & GCSEs. A*-B given double weighting. Separate table for IB.
In the paper or was free to access online yesterday but now behind paywall.
