Can I do a mini-hijack? How long (typically) from when a child starts piano to when they might be good enough to sit for a grade 1 exam?

Flack - how long's a piece of string?!
Anything from 6 months to 3 years, or longer. It depends on their age, musical aptitude, and whether or not they practice.
It also depends on the teacher a bit too, as some are a bit precious and will only enter children when they expect them to get a distinction. Others are happy for them to just scrape through.

Is there a background story to this question?

Ds did his grade 1 piano a few weeks ago and the results took about 10 days, it was really quick.
