however, there was no sun out, it wasnt too hot at all but they cancelled because somewhere said it was heatwave level 3.
They have rebooked for today. It it roasting. It will be 31 on the shadeless field.
I have just rang up to ask whether it will be taking place, yes, its heatwave level 3 again, yes, but we cant win can we.
There will be lots of water and gazebos.
Do I just go and pick up dd now or what?

I agree with Tenalady. As long as the school alloows hats, ensures sun cream is on and provides laods of water then I think it's okay

alexsmum · 17/07/2006 12:16

very surprised about the school not allowing hats. ds has as part of his uniform a legionaire style baseball cap with school badge on and in this weather we are expected to put cream on before school, send them in with hat and water bottle to keep with them in class.9 actually the water bottle thing is all year round)

Southern europeans cope with hot weather by doing the sensible thing and staying OUT of the sun!! - hence the siesta, French 2 hour lunch etc.

I agree we have to adapt, but this means not having sports days in the middle of the day in the middle of July! Our school held theirs in June, in the morning.

We English are absolutely insane not to realise that we should not be out in the strong sun, and every other country knows it about us. Ever heard of "mad dogs and english men...."?

I will only take dd out between 9am-11am or after 4.30pm at the moment. The rest of the time, it's playing in the shade.

I grew up in Africa, and as a child I would choose to play indoors or under shade in the heat of the day.

Polgara2 · 17/07/2006 12:26

Nutcracker, that's appalling not letting them have their hats on! Were you there? I would have complained too, and very loudly! We had sports day last week, am and pm, it was a hot but cloudy day, they were allowed hats and although we had the letter about not passing them water etc no-one stopped me (fortunately for them ).

Polgara2 · 17/07/2006 12:27

Oops that should have said extra water, they did all have their water bottles but they soon drank them. School provided cartons of juice at one of the rest stops too.

misdee · 17/07/2006 12:29

dd1 sports day was this morning, she didnt go as was throwing uop this morning. but her note says that they must have a full labelled water bottle and a wide-brimmed/school hat.

Furball · 17/07/2006 12:39

Ds had his last week. The children were all sat out in full sunshine awaiting the races. DS had his hat on and all day sun cream which I had put on him that morning. I also took him a drink which he soon finished. But the children were only offered a small cup of squash at the very end, which I thought a bit poor.

charliecat · 17/07/2006 15:57

Well, I went, armed with the umbrella from a pub table
The children were all sat in the full sun so I stood behind my dd and a group of kids with her in the sun where possible.
Headmaster thanked all the parents for coming and said at least we would go home with a suntan. Twat.

At my DS's school they quite sensibly kept the children in for last play time,as it was so hot.

They are sat in the front room now, which is lovely and cool, stripped to their pants, having drinks and cold grapes from the fridge.

Xena · 17/07/2006 16:41

only mad dogs and english men go out in the midday sun.

ds sports day this afternoon factor 30 sun cream and my shoulders still burnt. took dd2 and ds2. dd in long sleeve thin loose cotton top and long floaty skirt big floopy hat covered her in sun block before I dressed her. ds2 was in the pram with a sun shade so ok.
ds1 8 stropped cause he didn't win

mrspink27 · 17/07/2006 17:33

our sports day is scheduled for thursday at 11-1.30. a few of the mums have got together this afternoon and decided to approach the head, pushing me forward as the volunteer! the head said, oooh yes it will be hot, so bring your gazebo and parasols!
erm... yes says I, cant we change the time to 9.30 and then those that want to picnic in the midday heat can,
oooh says head, will have to consult with staff as there is a lot of setting up to do!!!

there are lots of us with young babies who really dont want to be forced to endure the heat either,

AbbyLou · 17/07/2006 18:38

I'm a teacher (infants) and we had our sports day today at 1.30pm. We sent a letter home on Friday asking children to bring suncream, hats and plaenty of water. Most did but there were still children sent to school with none of the above. It is also very annoying from the teacher's point of view when parents can't be arsed to send their child properly dressed/prepared for the weather. We had all the children in the shade ALL afternoon and seating for the parents in the shade too. We had no rpoblem with overheating children as our PTA organised drinks - free for those taking part and a small donation from spectators.

mrspink27 · 17/07/2006 19:00

abbylou - atleast the strongest sun is passed by 1.30, even if it is still hot!

our field is about as open and unsheltered as they come, am currently ringing round other parents to get them to ring the school or talk to the head tomorrow!

joelallie · 17/07/2006 19:32

Our school has rescheduled sports day from when I could go to when I can't !! . SO that's the 5th event I haven't been able to attend this summer....

They've rescheduled it from tomorrow afternoon to Wen morning. Now I can see the morning thing makes sense - it'll all be over by 11 - but why not the same day? I can't be the only one who'd made arrangments so that they could make it tomorrow.

firestorm · 18/07/2006 14:14

ours has been rescheduled from tomorrow afternoon to tomorrow morning. thankfully i was able to arrange to go into work a bit late so i wont miss it. however, my mum was going to come & watch it & she cant make the morning. i feel sorry for parents who will miss it because they cant change work totally understand why the school have rescheduled though.
