however, there was no sun out, it wasnt too hot at all but they cancelled because somewhere said it was heatwave level 3.
They have rebooked for today. It it roasting. It will be 31 on the shadeless field.
I have just rang up to ask whether it will be taking place, yes, its heatwave level 3 again, yes, but we cant win can we.
There will be lots of water and gazebos.
Do I just go and pick up dd now or what?

take a parasol thing or golfing umbrella with you, plenty of water or ice if you can, sunblock, hats, handfan too and a bucket to fill with water so dd can soak her boiling feet in it to remain cool.

That magicool stuff is pretty good too

Whats this all about then. A bit of sun and we cant cope. Come on, make sure you have plenty of fluids, take a bit of shade, heavy on the sun factor and slap on a hat and glasses. Enjoy yourself. Remember our ancestors giving birth in the potato fields and carrying on with the work to be done.

Do you remember sports days or similar events being cancelled when you were little, i dont! Unwrap that cotton wool and take neccesary precautions to enjoy a cracking day.

RANT OVER

tenalady · 17/07/2006 10:49

rofl

expatinscotland · 17/07/2006 10:50

'no, it starts at 1.45.
Till 3.15. '

That's too bloody hot! We went out yesterday got there at noon and left at 2. If there's NO shade, it's WAY too hot.

London is hotter than the friggin' Canary Islands by 6 degrees C today!

As far as our ancestors are concerned, the planet has warmed A LOT in hte past 100 years due to global warming.

nutcracker · 17/07/2006 10:54

Dd1 had her sports day last thursday. It was in the morning but they had to sit out in direct sunlight for over 2 hours and hardley any had their hats on because the teachers said they couldn't run with them on.

Dd came home that evening complining of a headache and feeling sick and spent the next day in bed with the bucket next to her.

I am very and have written a note to her teacher stating that Dd must not go outside at all without her hat.

tenalady · 17/07/2006 10:56

MIL 75 yrs reckons its a load of rubbish. The sun rays maybe stronger but the heat is just the same as any good summer she has had in her years.

tenalady · 17/07/2006 10:57

Nutcracker, just interested, what stopped you from marching over and rescuing her from the sun without hat? I was just mulling over what I might of done.

charliecat · 17/07/2006 10:59

Ok, being anal now, and I never refer to guidelines, but the guidelines are...stay out of the sun between 11 and 3....so WHY hold sports day then???

OP posts:
tenalady · 17/07/2006 11:01

Good point, perhaps it doesnt interfere with their tea breaks

tenalady · 17/07/2006 11:02

It would only leave tween 9 - 11 for sports day.

expatinscotland · 17/07/2006 11:03

The intensity of the rays DOES make a difference, unfortunately, particularly w/regard to sun damage to the skin.

charliecat · 17/07/2006 11:03

thats just enough time And although its roasting its not bake your skin off roasting.

tenalady · 17/07/2006 11:04

Oh I thought we were talking heat here, with ice and water and stuff. The rays protection is simple to tackle with a good sun cream.

expatinscotland · 17/07/2006 11:07

Rays also have a nasty habit of heating up the body, too, in addition to damaging the skin.

Honestly, I can feel it's gotten hotter and the sun stronger since I was a kid. My MIL feels it has, too.

tenalady · 17/07/2006 11:11

Dont get me wrong, I cant stand the heat and too much sun myself but I think we need to become a little more accustomed and prepared to conditions here in the uk rather than ducking out. What do our European counterparts do? Was in my place in S of France a week ago and we were hitting the late 30's with humidity. The French have their 2 hour lunch and carry on.

milward · 17/07/2006 11:15

But for the the french this means shade & resting not sitting in the sun or doing school sports.
Plus now the kids are on holiday since end of June till first of september.

tenalady · 17/07/2006 11:19

Any further suggestions on how to tackle it then?
Could cancel altogether
Insist it happens in the morning
Could postpone for a cooler day but that would cause difficulties with parents time off etc.
Anything else?

charliecat · 17/07/2006 11:33

The school DID postpone on a MUCH cooler day.

I have just emailed the school saying next year it might be a good idea to have it in the morning, and also can you let me know if your planning on cancelleing as it between 30 and 32
according to the BBC.

I emailed them a couple of weeks ago saying there was no shade and the next day the kids were allowed into school to get out of the sun.

my older son has his sports day today too, cancelled from the other week (because of the heat), i think it would be better if they could do sports day in the last week of may, or the beginning of June we should know that the weather is getting like this in july now

SaintGeorge · 17/07/2006 12:04

DS1's sports day today too - starts at 1.40pm.

Wouldn't mind too much except parents have instructions NOT to go over to the kids with food or, more importantly, drinks.

The headmaster is in for a bit of a shock if he tries to stop me!

tiredemma · 17/07/2006 12:07

my ds1 sports day today - at 1.15, just as the sun will be beating down most intense, I will be taking water for him, ( and a parasol for me, la de dah)
