If your year 8 had a detention for forgetting a bit of homework (for the first time ever)

....how do you think his teacher would respond to him asking for it to be on a different day because on the day concerned he's got an away match and he'd miss the coach?

(ds is planning to ask her today and he wants your opinions!)

At DSs school, they seem quite accommodating about this so long as you're not delaying the detention indefinitely. I would get him to suggest a specific different day.

If you get him to tell his form tutor then his tutor can inform the teacher, so that when your ds goes to ask the teacher is already aware

Is the away match a school fixture?

If so, then I'd definitely ask. But I think I'd make it sound like a 'how to make sure the logistics work?' to both detention teacher and sports fixture teacher, and let them sort out which DS should be doing.

At my son's school they would want him to go to the match, and def would let him move the detention.

I secretly thought that- particularly as he handed it in the next morning! Proper letter home and everything.

But I do agree with proper consequences, and rules being enforced, so I can't have it both ways. And it will be a good learning experience for him- having to approach the teacher and sort out the practicalities without sounding outraged at the unfairness of it all.........

I have no problem with detention for forgeting homework...dd got one the first week of year 7 for the same reason. She never did it again.

I don't have a problem with it either. Mind you, unless it was "forgetting" rather than forgetting, I'm not sure how a detention will stop it ever happening again!

It seems a bit harsh considering it's the first offence... but year 8 (not age 8 as I read it the first time) - hey ho...

It shouldn't be an issue at all. I think at most schools the teachers have a bit of a 'code' about it (not missing matches for detention).

Ds's school allows an afterschool detention to be moved for a fixture, but not a Saturday detention.

Oh I think it's good to get a detention. He is year 8 after all - he knows about homework. Wish DSs school would consistently care about homework being given in ....

Oh, I have no problem with the detention- although i do think that an after school detention for one homework a day late after a completely blameless year and a bit is just a little harsh.

Anyway the teacher rang me today to say that she had let him off because he was so polite and sensible trying to sort it out, so it's all good. A lesson learned- if not necessarily the one the detention was intended to teach!

I would have no problem moving that sort of detention if the child approached me directly and asked me politely. When I do have a problem with it, and this has happened more than once, is when I issue a dentention and the child informs me rudely 'I can't go because I'm playing in a match so ner'.
In those circumstances the PE dept is usually more than happy to inform the child that their place on a team is conditional on satisfactory academic performance. But I am sure your DS would never behave like that!

FWIW I never set homework for the next day as students often have clubs, matches or rehearsals to attend. Also I try not to make a fuss about small problems; I make a note of it and expect the work the next lesson. I don't want students anxious about coming to the lesson or resentful, it will not help them to learn and enjoy the subject.

Of course if it happens the next week then sanctions will start- but this very rarely happens.
