School Sports Day - what to wear ?!

ds (8) has his first real sports day tomorrow. Ideas as to whether one dresses up, normal school pick-up casual, sophisticated or what. Trying to avoid "sporty" look ! Hear rumours of parents race too.

Lycra body suit and running spikes. Win At All Costs.

HonorMatopoeia · 15/06/2006 20:25

Our parents normally come in jeans and T shirt combos but with trainers incase they're cajouled into the parents' races !!!

cece · 15/06/2006 20:26

If you don't want to race wear something that is too impractical to race in otherwise I would go in what I wear most days - dependent on the weather

Aimsmum · 15/06/2006 20:32

oooh my DD has hers first one on Monday (she is 5), I was planning on going along to sports day, then going straight to work (it is first thing in the morning)

I never even considered that I would have to take part in races .....argh....I was planning on just wearing what i would normally wear to work (pretty smartish)....will have to have a re-think now!

Glad you started this threadGrin

pmsl is that what you'll be sporting Soupy , with BabyDragon attached ! Don't do lycra and would fail miserably in the winning stakes (some seriously sporty fellow parents !). dh is already getting cold feet at the thought of a dad's race !

Going for the "it's not he winning but the taking part" philosophy !

Yes, I'm afraid it's true about parents racing. DS1 once had to make a little book about Sports Day. The last page "What I liked least about Sports Day" was "My mum came last in the parents race" with a very sad picture of that event - be warned. Get the lycra and spikes and put some time into training, or stay well out of it!

Just had DD1's sports day. Mix of clothing, but generally fairly casual. Lots of longish skirts, linen trousers and pink birkenstocks (for the women that is). I would say, one shade up from the normal pick-up casual, but not trying too hard either.

The mothers' race was generally run barefoot. Sadly I wasn't able to participate as DD2 howled at the very concept of me leaving her for the few seconds(!) it would have taken me to complete the course. Phew!

My top tip is to borrow a digital camera if you haven't got one. Preferably a fancy one where you can hold down the button and take umpteen shots a second. With loads of kids in motion and spectators in the foreground and background confusing the automatic focussing, it's tough to get a really good shot. It seemed to be OK to stand a discreet distance behind the finishing line so that you could take a full-frontal of the race.

Actually, for all my misgivings about DD1's school, it was great event that somehow combined military levels of organisation with a really relaxed and fun atmosphere.

Ah, the mums race; not to be under-estimated or for the faint hearted!Grin

All coy and giggly at the start, but by god does it get serious when they get going. Skirts tucked in knickers, elbows sharpened. They've been waiting for the opportunity to trip each other up all year!WinkGrin

LIZS · 15/06/2006 21:49

Thanks for that ! ok, so linen and smart casual good , lycra perhaps not! Mules and sandals but not trainers !

Parents' races - let's see how many competitive parents step forward ! Grin

I have been in training for months for the mums race, I actully came 2nd whilst 4 months pregnant so I fancy my chances this year !!

MarsLady · 15/06/2006 23:17

Personally I wear flipflops and a sarong. Then as the children's races finish I paint my toenails. Oh darn it! Can't race again this year. Sigh.................

Thomcat · 15/06/2006 23:24

a boob tube and no bra for the sack race.

Thomcat · 15/06/2006 23:33

Vivienne Westwood heels for the 3 legged race.

mrsnoah · 15/06/2006 23:47

thomcat..LOL.. coming to yopur sports day instead just to see that! Grin

mrsnoah · 15/06/2006 23:48

(your ) !

Cam · 17/06/2006 16:48

Don't do what one mother did at my dd's previous school LIZS, ie. wear a white totally see-through cheesecloth short dress with no bra and a visible white thong Shock

She then entered the mother's race and held up her dress so she could run Shock

Her poor children were so Blush

LIZS · 17/06/2006 17:51

oooh that sounds vile !! Took the advice here and went for linen trousers and cotton top and it was fine ! No parents' races though Grin but still have dd's to come this week.
