The Ned Show? Anyone had any experience? Seems bogus and a rip-off.

Anyone had this at their school? This American company pitches "The Ned Show" as a motivational assembly espousing values like "never give up, help others" etc. This is all very laudable, but in reality it seems like a vehicle to sell stuff to our kids. Specifically yo-yo's that are used throughout the show, and which the children can buy afterwards (for up to £12!!!). I object to this crass commercialisation in our schools. But if anyone can tell me anything positive, I'd welcome it.

We had it at our school. It was an entertaining show- very american- but YES it was just to sell overpriced yo yo's.

We are not having them again this year !

They were at ds2's primary a couple of years ago - the children enjoyed it enormously but it is just a way to sell to-yos ... On the plus side, practising yo-yo tricks kept him busy for much of the subsequent summer holiday!

I did feel for children whose parents won't have been able to afford the yo-yos though ...

We had the show last year, and it stopped the year 6 boys falling out over football for a while!
We "converted" the football field into a yo-yo field and the older children tutored the younger ones. The children brought yo-yo's in from home and we had a number of cheap ones that the children could "borrow" for playtime if they didn't have one of their own. The NED yo-yo's are expensive but ( apparently!) are very good quality ones-we had some yo-yo experts after a few weeks!

Wasn't something similar, parodied on "The Simpsons"?

Spinstrel · 04/07/2013 09:59

We just had it too and I thought it was pretty outrageous, as did most other parents. Plus the kids weren't allowed to use the yoyos in school anyway. My 7 yo had no recollection of whatever the motivational message was, either.

For anyone who is interested, the episode where The Simpsons parody the travelling yoyo motivational show, as in OP, is called "Bart the Lover"
