Calling atheists (and anyone else with an opinion) - am I right to get a bit peed off about this?

Eldest daughter goes to a state school, no relgious affiliation. However, it does seem to hasve close (too close, for my liking) ties with a local church - Christian. Have tolerated that.

Yesterday, she came home very excited, telling me their school had been picked to sing on a cd. On closer inspection of the leaflet, and then reading the website, it's a Christian thing. I won't stop her doing it but I am a bit peed off that a) I wasn't told about it and b) I feel they are using kids to promote Chritianity.

I'm going to investigate the site (popconnections.co.uk) a bit more when I get a chance and will write to the head but just wanted some perspective on this. Anyone else know about them? Am I over-reacting?

Thank you liquidclocks, liked that post. The event has been and gone so will now compose my letter to the head. Felt extremely uncomfortable throughout the whole event though.

Rhubarb · 26/05/2006 13:44

Marina · 26/05/2006 13:44

Ds would have shouted "ker-ching!" you know plummy...now, what can you come up with for us to counter his exceedingly affected assertion that he is a pimp?

Tinker · 26/05/2006 13:48

Oh, I'm in the plummymummy fan club as well.

< But I do secretly enjoy DC's posts as well Blush>>

Me too tinker, in a sort of "I am so very glad I don't know anyone who talks like that in real life" sort of appalled fascination...

liquidclocks · 26/05/2006 13:55

Tinker - good luck composing your letter, I hope your head teacher is understanding. I'd just put it in a way s/he won't take as you being just a stroppy mum! I was just having a think and I also thought of an alternative comparison - it's not just about religion is it? With everything in the news recently about animal rights, how would parents feel about the school paying for animal rights activists to come and present their case, or even the scientists that do the experimenting? There are numerous issues I'm sure we'd all feel happier being consulted about - I'm a firm believer that's it's the parent's role to teach children about ethics, right & wrong etc, and the teachers' role to educate about facts. There, rant over - good luck with your letter!

Such a pity DC wasn't in the queue when they were handing out self-editing genes.

Marina · 26/05/2006 13:58

ROFL Janh. I keep expecting him to turn up in Dr Who...

Tinker · 26/05/2006 13:58

Exactly lc. Whilst I was there (and there was a screen showing projected images which kept changing and one was for teh Alpha course - it was being advertised) I wondered how teh school would deal with a "militant" atheist group doing a similar event? Anyway, thanks for your input.

Marina, I think I have missed something crucial. DC a pimp? Now that is an intriguing thought. On which planet? Like the self-editing genes idea JanH Grin

skerriesmum · 26/05/2006 19:25

Pimp as in recruitment consultant (I was shocked too when he said this on another thread!)

Pruni · 26/05/2006 19:33

Bloody hell Tinker - I was v restrained in my first post on this thread - but flashing up an ad for the Alpha course would make me see red. Not on at all.
I started a thread on Alpha course once - v interesting reading. Advertising to kids v underhand imo.

plummymummy · 27/05/2006 00:47

Really? On another thread he said he was a journalist. I seem to remember a rather pompous claim of something along the lines of "I get work, not because I write particularly well, but because I have something to say" Hmmmmm Wink It was on the thread about English Lit degrees. As usual he slagged off Humanities whilst extolling the virtues of Science. Yawn. I think it was on that thread anyway. There's been so many bizarre comments by pimp that all the threads are merging into one IYSWIM

plummymummy · 27/05/2006 01:30

Here's the word from the pimp: "As a (part time) journalist I do have to warn that the competition is really really fierce.
I could describe how fierce, but am self censoring here...
I was actually head hunted into writing, not because I'm any good at it (if you doubt this go look at www.theregister.co.uk/2006/04/06/osvistacoding/)

But instead because I had something to say.
If he's serious about journalism, then my advice is to parallel the degree with becoming expert in something he loves.
Even if journalism stops being a goal, it would hurt to know about other stuff. One thing I noted about arts types at Uni was their staggering ignorance about things outside their core topics" Oh ok he's a part time journalist.

plummymummy · 27/05/2006 01:31

Sorry English Language not Lit.

Pruni · 27/05/2006 07:21

Pruni, we are not all like DC!

clerkKent · 28/05/2006 14:51

Whoops! I thought I had logged off dw's username. Fauve's last comment was in fact mine and nothing to do with her.

bloss · 28/05/2006 15:07

I'm with you, Tinker. Before I was Christian, I would have had a real issue with this kind of involvement. It may not mean much to most on here, but it would to me.
