Just found out kids not in school tomorrow

Called in to school this morning to pick up vomitting ds1, bringing total number of sick boys in house to 3 cos dh and ds2 also poorly, and receptionist was talking about her "day off" tomorrow! I questioned her and a passing teacher about when the school had sent home the letter informing parents of the school closure and was met with blank looks and the answer that none had been sent. They did say that they would ask the secretary this afternoon, but that's no comfort to the working parents who will have less than 12hrs to arrange childcare. It is secondary school, so the impression i got was that childcare wasn't an issue, but i think leaving 11yr olds alone is not on.

So, am i being oversensitive or should i complain about the lack of notice?

our school is closed tomorrow and we were notified a week ago - think a days notice is a bit rubbish !

helsi · 27/03/2006 13:46

I would say something as most people have alternative arrangements to make and so it might put many people under a lot of pressure.

We were told last Wednesday which wasn't too bad.

Auntymandy · 27/03/2006 13:46

We were told last week

ja9 · 27/03/2006 13:48

our school told friday

Sherbert37 · 27/03/2006 13:49

All our secondaries are open (to the disgust of DS1) but the primary let us know on Friday. It's a bit difficult to known who is 'in' and who is 'out' with this.

ja9 · 27/03/2006 13:49

are all ur boys vomitting? i'm off work vomitting too...

Sad
Blu · 27/03/2006 13:50

Is this all schools then?
Why?

eeek!

hana · 27/03/2006 13:52

unison members are on strike ( usually support staff in a school ) plus lots of council members
about their pensions, gov't is d*king them around

waggledancer · 27/03/2006 14:10

Have known about the strike for a while but assumed ours were at school cos not told any different. This happens quite a lot at the school, teachers seem to think no-one works except them! This is my last week on mat leave and was supposed to be chill time for me and now I'm nursing sick boys and will have dh at home as wel tomorrow.

Not all vomitting no, dh is "exhausted" and "gutsy" (his description), ds1 is throwing up and ds2 is spiking temps, miserable and sleeping lots. All different bugs to swop with each other so this could last weeks

teachers would not have been responsible for sending out the letters, it would have been the head or governing body

crunchie · 27/03/2006 14:30

You lot TOTALLY paniced me, I had to phone our school. Thank god they are not on strike :)

Sherbert37 · 27/03/2006 14:42

Also includes lollipop people. Not enough supervision for the playgrond too apparently - the 'Health & Safety' card...

Gillian76 · 27/03/2006 14:45

Our school and nursery are both closed but S5 and 6 in DHs (secondary) school. We knew on Friday.

Mercy · 27/03/2006 14:50

Batters - perhaps kitchen staff?

Also Nursery nurses, secretaries/admin. staff, cleaners, caretakers.

It's GMB as well as Unison btw.

Tinker · 27/03/2006 15:01

Ours isn't which is quite annoying since my eldest is ill.

I don't blame you for being hacked off at the lack of warning - as you say not everyone wants to let their kids fend for themselves for the day regardless of their age. DD's nursery is closed, but both the boys' schools are open thank goodness. I actually wouldn't have minded if they were both shut, but couldn't face the cries of "it's not fair" if only one had been!!!

My daughters high school is closed today as are most of the secondary schools around here.
They were given a letter on Friday about it. I didn't actually get the letter but my 16 year old told me the school would be closed and it has been in the local news for the past week.

MerlinsBeard · 28/03/2006 10:44
