So, it seems the whole blooming world has to stop for SATs preparation. Not even a few minutes spare to make a poxy card!

My Y6 child made me one, but my Y1 child did not!

tiredteacher · 26/03/2006 14:23

Sympathies schnapps but you have clearly never made cards with 30 kids. It takes at least an afternoon and this time of year with yr6 is a nightmare. We don't do Mother's or Father's day cards at school - can't see why children can't make them at home... Will probably get bellowed at for that but there you go! Sorry - not meaning to upset anyone

SoupDragon · 26/03/2006 14:26

Neither reception nor Y2 made them. Can't see the problem tbh.

Yorkiegirl · 26/03/2006 14:37

some classes made them at my school and some didn't.

My y4 child didn't. Year 1 painted a plant pot and potted a bulb (they are doing this as part of a sceame of work on growth) but no card.

It would take frorever btw and not ba ajob of a few minutes. With my Y7 class I have taken to cutting things out for tem as they take too long to do things in a lesson of 1 hour and 10 minutes Shock

RTKangaMummy · 26/03/2006 15:25

DS made me a card and a necklace Smile

Sorry you didn't get one Sad

The class could choose what they wanted to do for their mums

draw picture, write a story or make something

One boy wrote a poem about ARSENAL for his mum GrinGrinGrin

saffy202 · 26/03/2006 15:36

DS1 hasn't made one for three years ever since he passed year 4 and went to middle school. Always makes one at home for me thou. DS2 Y2 made a sunflower on string and in the middle is a photo of himself which they must have taken at school.

robinpud · 26/03/2006 15:42

I had a lovely picture of me and ds with writing that says thank you mummy for taking me to the shops and buying me handcuffs! God knows what teacher thought of that !
Agree with other contributors, there are a lot of reasons wht children don't make them at school. Think that ideally, children should want to make something themselves and not present a card made without much thought at school. I also received a k'nex battleship and a k'nex revolving flower!

cheltenhamgal · 26/03/2006 15:54

tiredteacher, if they were made at home then I would never get one. I live on my own with dd and really appreciate the schools efforts in helping the children make cards as otherwise I would never get anything not even a birthday card of my dd

cheltenhamgal · 26/03/2006 15:56

but in saying that I never know what to do with the fathers day cards she makes as I dont even know where her dad lives. I have got a drawer full of them

tillykins · 26/03/2006 15:58

thats sad, they should make cards for mothers day at school - my son is 2.5 and made things at his various playgroups that I had to pretend not to see Wink

the pasta and pipecleaner necklace is a particular favourite, goes with everything Grin

SecondhandRose · 26/03/2006 16:59

Neither of mine came home from school with a card yr 2 and yr 6.

SoupDragon · 26/03/2006 17:06

I shut DSs in the playroom with 2 blank cards, the junk modelling box, glue, sequis etc etc. I got 2 cards, one with a tall thin long legged mum and one with short fat sausage arm-and-legged mum, a bird (I think) made out of a mini cereal packet and a cardboard crown groaning under the weight of glitter glue!

And a playroom covered in sequins, glitter glue and bits of chopped up cardboard. Sigh.

Thank you for the replies everyone, but lol at people getting the wrong end of the stick Grin I have no problem with children in general not making mother's day cards at school, and I actually got a nice home-made pressie and card along with brekkie and a cuppa in bed. But every other child in the school makes at least a card, I thought I was making it quite obvious that my issue is that Y6 didn't purely because of SATs preparation. It obviously is an important celebration at the school, but SATs prep is soooo important that everything else gets pushed out, particularly subjects such as art and music.
Just to reiterate, my issue is not that my dd didn't get to make a card (she did, at home) but that so much time is put into pressurising young children to achieve grades that they could only achieve whith such intense coaching that there is not enough time for a simple art activity.
