Hi all
I am desperately looking for a Year 12 A level place for my son starting this term. Local schools with vacancies are Harris Academy Falconwood & Crown Woods College, Eltham.
Crown Woods College does not seem have had an Ofsted report since the recent major redevelopment. Crown Woods is able to offer all the subjects he is now keen to take up at AS (Economics, Geography, ICT & Business Studies with History as a fallback option).
The latest Ofsted report on Harris Falconwood dated March 2011 rates its overall effectiveness as "outstanding". However I know this may not always reflect the full story so am keen to obtain real life views from parents. Although it has vacancies Harris is not offering all the subjects this year my DS is keen to take. (They are not offering Geography so there he will need to take up Government & Politics instead which DS is not too keen. Also Harris offers ICT & Business Studies as a BTEC rather than at AS/A2 level.)
Questions:
- I would welcome any views on the quality of education, staff and facilities, based on real life experience of your or your friends kids, at Harris Academy Falconwood & Crown Woods College.
Due to the circumstances summarised below, we haven't had an opportunity to attend open days or do detailed research so would really welcome your input.
- I would also request names of any other recommended Sixth Form schools/colleges in the Greenwich/Bexley/Bromley/Lewisham areas. (I have contacted a number of local schools and colleges & they are all full so options look to be limited.)
Background details:
My son achieved decent grades in his 10 GCSEs (2xA*(Physics and History), 1xA (Chemistry), 4xB (Maths,English, Geog & Biology), 1xC & 2xDs) in June 2011 and has been pursuing his A Levels at a LEA maintained grammar school. Based on his performance during the year, he was predicted 2 B's & 2 D's in his AS levels in June 2012. He is now not allowed to continue or repeat at the Grammar school as he obtained 2 Ds (in Geography & Economics) & 2 Us (Biology & Chemistry). (They need a minimum of 2 Ds and 2 Us to continue to Year 13 - Further details of this can be found in my posting in this separate thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/education/1555078-Can-a-grammar-school-pupil-be-forced-to-leave-school-due-to-poor-AS-level-results
He would now like to repeat Year 12 with the two subjects he obtained a D grade - Economics & Geography (with a view to obtaining a better grade) and take two different (relatively easier) subjects instead of those he got U grades (Wishes to choose ICT & Business Studies with History as a fallback).
He is keen to pursue A levels and go to Uni for a Business related degree and is not keen on doing BTECs or NVQs.
Many thanks.
