The impact of hunger / no breakfast on children's learning

My DS is too young for school as yet but we've been looking at reception ready for the 2013 intake - do they have a breakfast club etc. I was reading this article in the Guardian about the impact on learning of children not having breakfast. It's staggering. I had no idea that there were children desperate enough to eat pencil shavings...... No wonder they can't work well in class.

Yeah, cereal is almost £2 a box in our local shop. I was considering getting some this morning but we actually can't afford it (yay, again.) I get tesco deliveries but we are lucky to be able to do that, not everyone has a computer or internet access.
