School transport. Anyone got experience of the 'Vacant Seat' scheme?

DS may be moving schools to one 14 miles away. We wouldn't be eligible for the school bus as not catchment but using the above scheme and paying for the seat may be an option.

Does anyone do this? I assume there is a chance of no seat being availiable and they look at it on a termly basis?

something less formal exists at DS['s school. Its a bit of a nightmare as parents can be phoned up any day and told their child will not have a seat on the bus that afternoon so parents need to make alternative arrangements.

Double and treble check that its is on a termly basis and not subject to daily fluctuations.
