State high school for girls - dreadful.
Navy wool pinafore (first year only) and skirt (second year on) which were available from only one supplier, very expensive, and dry clean only. Blue nylon blouses, navy round-neck jumper. A friend was humiliated in front of the whole school because her mother knitted her a (much nicer) jumper instead of buying the mass-produced school one.
Outdoor uniform - blazer or gabardine and the much-hated berets in which every one of us looked ridiculous. The kids from the secondary modern would lie in wait, get them off us and throw them away. They were expensive too.
For games, blue t-shirt, navy gym knickers and navy divided skirt which had to be made specially. Gym knickers had to have 'eyes' (of hooks and eyes) sewn on outside and divided skirt had hooks on inside so knickers could hang inside skirt on your peg (I am not kidding).
For dance, green square neck tunic and green knickers which were hand made out of stiff scratchy cotton. We had to have separate leather indoor shoes which were just like Mickey Mouse's. The expense was horrendous and I was painfully aware of that. My mother was personally carpeted by the head for sending me in navy tights instead of the regulation black.
We were made to kneel on the floor to check that our hems were three inches below knee level. And the summer dresses had to be hand made at home out of the regulation material (gingham). Lots of one-upmanship among the nastier girls about their mothers' superior sewing skills etc.
Whatever function it served, that uniform was definitely not a leveller. We all knew whose uniform was second-hand - it was organised so that the second hand uniform was given out to the girls in the classroom.
