Hello
Thank you all for taking the time to reply.
You have all echoed my reasons for leaning towards the private system.
I have a couple of concerns about the one we're thinking of so wondered if you have any thoughts on this.
My daughter is a very bright and articulate little girl but is very sensitive and I think that she will do better at a girls school. I also think class size is important. I have only recently discovered that the class size in the private school we're looking at will be 24 in the reception class as opposed to 30 in the state school. On the one hand I think it's better than 30, but then wonder if only 6 less will make any difference?
Also, when I first enquired about the school, it had a single form entry into the reception year. We were really pleased when we had a letter to say that DD had passed her assessment. About a week later, during a conversation with the admissions office about something else, I found out that they were actually going to have 2 reception classes. I'm not sure what to make of this. I had hoped the assessment would sort of ensure that the school and DD were a good fit, but am not sure now what the selection citeria was?
Quite a few of the state schools we've seen and are planning on applying for, are small schools and one has already taken on a bulge class and the others are expecting to have to take one on in the next school year. I can't see how the facilities that were designed and built to accomodate 60 kids into reception and are now possibly facing the fact that they will actually need to fit in another 30. Somthing doesn't seem right on this as the state schools are bound to be stretched more than they already are.
I am genuinely confused about what to do. Definitely a heart vs head dilemma. If we don't get a place in the state school of our choice the we will go down the private route, so I'm thinking about this for then, although I'm still leaning towards the private option. We can afford the first few years and after my DS starts full time school, I'll go back to work to fund the rest of the fees. The wrap around care will be invaluable then, based on the hours I used to work before having kids.
Thank you all for sharing your reasons. It's really good to know. I realise there are alot of threads on MN on this subject but although they are interesting haven't really helped me answer the question I started with on this thread.
Take care and hope you all have a great weekend.
