Would you like to reminisce with me about school assemblies?

DH and I were talking about the 'Come and Praise' book, and singing remembering the songs.

Does anyone else remember songs such as Autumn Days and Cross over the road my friend? Which others were there?

I am 36 and was at primary school Sept 80 to July 87.

CupOfBrownJoy · 28/09/2011 22:28

oh oh oh I've been wracking my brains and here it is...

Here I am Lord
It is I, Lord
I have heard you, callling in the night
I will go Lord
If you lead me
I will hold, your people in my heart....

weevilswobble · 28/09/2011 22:28

Tequila, i go to a Catholic church and me and DD look up all the hymns first! I really well up at church when singing. Would never go to Mass without the singing!

CupOfBrownJoy · 28/09/2011 22:28

can't remember the verse though.... can anyone help?

LetThereBeRock · 28/09/2011 22:28

We had one that went,Abba,Abba Father. You are the potter. We are the clay. The work of your hands. Mould us,mould us and fashion us...

It was another real dirge.

Tequilamockinbird · 28/09/2011 22:29

I'm 32, didn't realise these were sung in the 90's too. My DD is nearly 14 and hasn't heard of most of them, infact she's gone to bed mortified that DH and I are sat downstairs singing hymns Grin

LetThereBeRock · 28/09/2011 22:30

I'm 27 so I was at primary from August 89 to August 96.June if you count the holidays.

weevilswobble · 28/09/2011 22:30

I'm 42.
Primary in the 70's. Groovy! But alot of singing at Catholic secondary too.

DownyEmerald · 28/09/2011 22:31

I was at primary school in the 70s and reading this great thread has reminded me of the Grandfather Clock and When the Knight Won his Spurs both of which I adored, and Lord of the Bleeding Dance as it was known in our house (my parents were both primary teachers; between us we must have sung that a thousand times).

Harvest Festival last year dd's school did Autumn Days, and this year the broad beans in their blankety beds. Both were new to me. And it was lovely (atheist that I am) when she came back from school singing Sing Hosannah at the top of her voice.

Used to do a lot of weekend trips with my dad's school - lots of quartermaster stores, oh you'll never get to heaven (in a baked bean tin, 'cos a baked bean tin's got baked beans in), and others I can't remember.

AyesToTheRight · 28/09/2011 22:31

Oh honestly cat is now devouring shrew (outside luckily).
She has no sense of occasion it would appear.

chocoroo · 28/09/2011 22:32

I'm 31. I'm going to ask my Mum if any of the hymns are still sung as she works in a school in the next village along from where I grew up.

I know all the Christmas ones are though. And im sure she said they also sing Angels by Robbie Williams and You Raise Me up but they may have been for special assemblies..,

ScaredyDog · 28/09/2011 22:32

Oh my, hymn

acsec · 28/09/2011 22:33

Tequila we watched Geordie Racer and I'm in Surrey - watched a clip on youtube just the other day - how the bloody hell did I know what was happening atthe time when I can't understand a word they are saying now?!

I love Colours of Day. I also really like We shall go out with joy and be led forth with peace and the mountains and the hills shall breakforth before you. They'll be shouts of joy and the trees of the fields shall clap shall clap their hands!

We sing loads of these still at the school I teach at :o

CupOfBrownJoy · 28/09/2011 22:33

33 - at Catholic primary (hence all hymns and no groovy stuff allowed Smile) 1982-89...

oreocrumbs · 28/09/2011 22:33

Tequila don't worry your safe! mine was a catholic primary that began with an O. Must just have been the same time and maybe the same LEA! Lovely thread though - I feel all warm inside. My mother went to work at my primary school after we left and I had the great privilege of being able to go reguarly to see the school assemblies and christmas concerts etc!! I loved it - it kept the magic alive that little bit longer

BettyTurnip · 28/09/2011 22:34

Someone mentioned Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho (and the walls came tumbling down), we used to sing that; also nobody's mentioned Michael Row the Boat Ashore ("Hallejuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuulah!") In Music lessons we'd do rounds of Kookaburra and Algy Met A Bear - dd came home from school last week singing that so it's still doing the rounds, so to speak.

I have slightly bizarre memories of doing stretches in PE to the song Flying In The Arms of Mary, and doing a hokey-cokey style, all-join-hands dance to Brown Girl in the Ring in our lovely yellow and brown uniform. No prizes for guessing the decade Grin.

CarnivalBizarre · 28/09/2011 22:34

Apparently Jesus wanted me for a sunbeam and as a 5 year old in primary school in 1977 I really thought that this bloke called Jesus was going to come to my house, give my parents a sunbeam and take me away forever - terrifying!!!

I really didn't like assembly or RE lessons because of my perceptions of that song Grin

AyesToTheRight · 28/09/2011 22:35

Oh you'll never get to heaven
On a boy scout's knee
Cos a boy scout's knee's
Too knobbly

Repeat...then

I ain't gonna grieve my lord no mo-or-re
I ain't gonna grieve my lord
I ain't gonna grieve my lord
I ain't gonna grieve
my lord no more

oh you'll never get to heaven
In a playtex bra
Cos a playtex bra
Won't stretch that far

etc

Oh you'll never get to heaven
In Captain's car
Cost Captains' car
Won't go that far

etc

LetThereBeRock · 28/09/2011 22:36

We had Here I Am Lord at my Grandmother's funeral back in May. I'm an atheist, but it's always made me cry, even before the funeral.Blush

I remember the verse,or one of the verses being...

I the Lord of sea and sky.
I have heard my people's cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin.
My hand will save.

I who made the stars of night.
I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them?
Whom shall I send?

AyesToTheRight · 28/09/2011 22:36

I don't think DC's school sings many hymns at all. Will ask them and find out (year 1 and year 3)

Tequilamockinbird · 28/09/2011 22:36

My favorite Christmas non-hymn was

Just hear those Sleigh Bells jingling, ring ting tingling too.
Come on it's lovely weather for a Sleigh ride together with you
Outside the snow is falling and friends are calling yoohoo
Come on it's lovely weather for a Sleigh ride together with you

OP posts:
acsec · 28/09/2011 22:37

Cupofbrownjoy the hymn you are thinking of is

  1. I, the Lord of sea and sky,
I have heard my people cry. All who dwell in dark and sin My hand will save. I, who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send?

Here I am Lord...

BeyondLimitsOfTheLivingDead · 28/09/2011 22:37

I just sang Autumn Days to DH to see if he remembered it. He joined in Grin

Then told me he had it stuck in his head this morning?! Confused

I was ready to type it out from memory but can see someone beat me to it!!
