Would you like to reminisce with me about school assemblies?

DH and I were talking about the 'Come and Praise' book, and singing remembering the songs.

Does anyone else remember songs such as Autumn Days and Cross over the road my friend? Which others were there?

oh y y Little Donkey! there's a tear-jerker....

What about Make Me A Channel of Your Peace? Another dirge.... also Holy Holy Holy, Lord God Almighty.

slightly more upbeat was At The Name Of Jesus, every knee shall bowwwww. Every tongue confess him, King of glooooory now....

ScaredyDog · 28/09/2011 22:21

DP is singing:

Oh Jesus I have promised
To serve you til the end
Dah dah dah dah
Dah dah dah dah dah

Never heard it (though it would have early 70s when he was at primary school)

I loved Shine Jesus Shine (from youth club though, not school)

oreocrumbs · 28/09/2011 22:21

Tequila - when I read your first few posts I was thinking I could have written all of these and then you said your in the NE and I am as well - wonder if we went to the same school?

I'm thinking of one - "His banner over me is love" with actions of course

weevilswobble · 28/09/2011 22:21

Letthereberock, yes that was ace! GrinGrin

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 28/09/2011 22:22

OH GOD! Im sure Ill be classed as sad, and Im not religious at all, but I still LOVE hymns.
When A knight Won His Spurs was my favourite, and Morning Has Broken.
Our headmaster was a pianist, and had a whole flowery intro that he played at the start of Morning Has Broken. I loved my tiny primary school, and adored the Headmaster, and had a real tearful moment, when I went back to school, to speak to the current head about DS attending. Whilst waiting outside the office, I spotted the teachers version hymn books, and grabbed the one I recognised. I opened it and there on the MHB page, in pencil, in his own hand, was the headmasters intro.
There are loads I remember,
Look For Signs That Summers Done,
For All The Saints,
All Things Bright And Beautiful....
I know all of them pretty much word for word, and used to sing them to my DCs at bedtime.

GreenEyesandNiceHam · 28/09/2011 22:22

Oh I love that one CupOfBrownJoy, I've just been trying to think of it

ASByatt · 28/09/2011 22:22

Oh Jesus I have promised
to serve you to the end.
Be thou forever near me
My master and my firend.
I shall not fear the !)WU*$$)&%( ??
Or ---da da daaa da daaaaaa
Nor wander from the ????
While you are by my side.....

LetThereBeRock · 28/09/2011 22:22

What was that one that went Little Jesus, something something soft and warm, wrapped around your tiny form?

Tequilamockinbird · 28/09/2011 22:23

Weevilswobble, I have a few tears too. You're right about being transported back. It's tears of joy, I have such fond memories of sitting cross-legged in assembly each morning and eagerly awaiting the song numbers being read out, hoping they would be the ones I liked.

I'd give anything to go back there, even for just a day!

oh lots of May Queen ones for the Catholics!

May is the month of Mary....

chocoroo · 28/09/2011 22:23

I love Little Donkey.

Someone from our recorder band at school always got to play the coconuts during it.

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 28/09/2011 22:23

OOH, and There Is A Green Hill, Far Away, and Lord of the Dance.

AyesToTheRight · 28/09/2011 22:23

Oh yes, Little Donkey

Think of a world without any flowers anyone?

There's one in my mind but I can't remember it - something about a sunset maybe - possibly this

"I watch the sunset
Lighten the sky
Casting its shadows near
And in the evening
Earth is at rest
I feel your presence near me

For you are always
Close to me
Following all my ways
May I be always
Close to you
Following all your ways Lord"

There was more but can't remember the words.

I rather miss hymns from Primary school :( Or maybe I am just feeling a little nostalgic to when things were different.

wigglesrock · 28/09/2011 22:23

LetThereBeRock I also loved Walk in the Light and CupofBrownJoy I did yours too Grin, right off to bed before any more of these bloody songs embed themselves in my brain.

Tequilamockinbird · 28/09/2011 22:24

I really must go to bed, but I'm transported back to primary school by this thread!!

Thanks OP Grin

weevilswobble · 28/09/2011 22:25

Ayestotheright. I love that one!

AyesToTheRight · 28/09/2011 22:26

Oh Jesus I have promised
to serve you to the end.
Be thou forever near me
My master and my friend
I shall not fear the battle
If thou art by my side
Nor wander from the pathway
If thou wilt be my guide

Cat just wandered in with a half dead shrew. This spoilt my happy delving back into hymns Grin

Loganberry · 28/09/2011 22:27

I can only remember the number because it was our schools most favourite song, probably due to the almost swearing part in it. Apart from that the rest of the song wasn't all that memorable because that's still the only line of it I can recall!

Tequilamockinbird · 28/09/2011 22:27

Does anyone else remember 'speed Bonnie boy like a bird on the wing, over the sea to Skye'?

1gglePiggle · 28/09/2011 22:27

TheDetective · 28/09/2011 22:27

Can I ask how old we all are please!! I'm 26 - so primary school late 90's/early 90's!!!

AyesToTheRight · 28/09/2011 22:27

The one with the wise man and the foolish man was great. Especially when the house on the sand went SPLAT and we could crash our hands on the floor Grin

ScaredyDog · 28/09/2011 22:28

Oh gosh Think of a world without any flowers was sooooo dirgy!

Tequilamockinbird · 28/09/2011 22:28
