Would you like to reminisce with me about school assemblies?

DH and I were talking about the 'Come and Praise' book, and singing remembering the songs.

Does anyone else remember songs such as Autumn Days and Cross over the road my friend? Which others were there?

Acsec, Geordie Racer? I remember that, wasn't that part of Look and Read? Wasn't there was one about silvery/green aliens landing and reading and writing things backwards because they'd learnt their letters from an inside-out plastic bag or something? I was at primary from 1982-1989!

Sparklegeek · 28/09/2011 22:38

Cupofbrownjoy -

"I the lord of sea & sky
I ahve heard my people cry
La la la la la la la!
Whom shall I caaaaaaaalllllllll?"

And then "Here I am Lord" etc.

Well we've already had 2 of my wedding songs - I Watch The Sunrise & Lord of The Dance.

And I can't believe Our God Reigns hasn't been mentioned? That one got louder & louder as it went along in my Catholic secondary.

bigfatgypsy · 28/09/2011 22:39

Did anyone sing Cockles and Mussels?

In Dublin's fair city, where the girls are so pretty, I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone.

Can't remember the rest apart from Alive-alive-oooh and poor Molly Malone dying at the end and her ghost being left to roam the streets. It was a bit sad Sad

My DDs have hymn books for school, and so many of these are in it!

We have Shine, Jesus Shine at church too, and DDs love Cauliflowers fluffy.

There was one we used to sing to the Eastenders theme tune........

Glory be to god on high
Ringing out his praises from every steeple
Lord alone to you we cry

oreocrumbs · 28/09/2011 22:41

ohb yes bigfatgypsy - not at school though my lovely lovely Grandad sang it to me, and another one - oh my darling, oh my darling, oh my darling clementine . . . . both make me cry

LetThereBeRock · 28/09/2011 22:41

Did anyone else sing How Great Thou Art? Or 'He will lift you up,on eagle's wings. I can't remember what it's called.

pinkmagic1 · 28/09/2011 22:42

I remember many of these hyms, anyone else used to sing John Browns baby and brown girl in the ring?

SayCoolNowSayWhip · 28/09/2011 22:42

I went to an all-girls Catholic school and have realised I know all these hymns!

I love I the Lord of Sea and Sky acsec Smile

There was another one I'm trying to remember that I loved, the refrain was something like Mañana.... Anyone? Blush

PeachyWhoCannotType · 28/09/2011 22:42

Yep most of these though DH knows none of them

We especially liked singing the Rupert the Bear song to Water of Life ( a few posts abck) though as they shared a tune, and there was a song at Christmas called every star shall sing a carol and it completely vanished from existence the day I went to comp

Ash Wednesday mass. Everyone sobbing. Happy Days!
slavetofilofax · 28/09/2011 22:43

DC's school had a service last week and parents got to go and sing I vow to thee my country. I loved it!

There was another one as well that I can't remember now, and didn't remember when I saw it written on the service sheet, but when the music started I remembered it instantly! Wierd, there's probably loads more that we would all know that no one's thought of yet.

Tequilamockinbird · 28/09/2011 22:43

Oh wow, Geordie Racer wasn't just watched up here then? I can't remember the story, only that it was about pidgeons! I can remember the theme tube though - Geordie racer, Geordie racer Grin

I'll have to get onto YouTube tomorrow and search!

Oh god I remember ALL of these! Hated The Ink is Black - I think even then i knew it was meaningless tosh

And mow at last
We plainly see
The alphabet of Liberty
Li-Ber-Tee

I mean, what the actual fuck?

The one that had us all sniggering was one with the line

'For I will behold them and warm them to my bosom'

The minute it appeared on the projector the shuffling and snorting began Grin

PeachyWhoCannotType · 28/09/2011 22:44

And the Ibnk Is Black the page is white- another fave

DS's don't sing any I know except oil in my lamp and cross over the road at their Welsh faith school but the ones they sing seem familiar with the lcoal parents

Tequilamockinbird · 28/09/2011 22:45

Oh Look & Read with the wordy the flying orange thingy?

Take jump and ing, build yourself a word, altogether now jumping, jumping.

Think big, big, big at the beginning. At the end of a sentence full stop.

Brilliant!

Jerusalem was on the radio this morning and I happily belted it out Grin

Did anyone watch Zig Zag?

stomping · 28/09/2011 22:45

Colours of Day knocks all the others into a cocked hat, with the possible exception of when a knight won his spurs

Rob1n · 28/09/2011 22:47

I remember all these from primary school. What about Lily the Pink?
Something like...
And so we drink a drink a drink,
To lily the pink the pink the pink,
The saviour of, the human race
And she invented, medicinal compound (?)
and now she's learning how to fly.

possibly not out of the come and praise book??! Perhaps our headteacher was on acid.

SayCoolNowSayWhip · 28/09/2011 22:48

Maranatha! That was it!

Maranatha! Maranatha! Maranatha!
Come Lord Jesus Come!

LetThereBeRock · 28/09/2011 22:51

Did anyone else sing Gloria In Excelsis Deo/Ding Dong Merrily On High at the school Christmas concerts, and not know when to stop with the Glorias?

Ours went something like Glooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

---- 10 minutes later

oooooooooooooooooooooooooh---accompanied by a thud every few seconds as another child expires from lack of oxygen.

15 minutes lateroooooooh in excelsis de-eh-oh. from the three children who managed to make it all the way through.

stomping · 28/09/2011 22:52

there is a newfangled one on Amazon but they seem to have omitted Autumn Days Hmm.

BeyondLimitsOfTheLivingDead · 28/09/2011 22:52

Hymns are one thing I really miss about Christianity. They're just so pretty!

Loganberry · 28/09/2011 22:53

Wordy! I can still vaguely remember one episode where he had a cup of tea "sent" into the monitor that he was on. I'm south-east based, I can remember Geordie Racer being about racing pigeons and a lad who looked after them, but not much more after that!

What was Zig Zag? I can't remember that, but I can remember "Me and You" who were two puppets, but not much more than that about them. I'm not sure if that was a school programme or home time tv though!

Tequilamockinbird · 28/09/2011 22:54

Letthereberock, yes Grin

OP posts:
Tequilamockinbird · 28/09/2011 22:55

Wasn't Me and You the 2 puppets who worked on a market stall selling fruit and veg? One had a very gruff voice? Or is that something completely different?
