Would you like to reminisce with me about school assemblies?

DH and I were talking about the 'Come and Praise' book, and singing remembering the songs.

Does anyone else remember songs such as Autumn Days and Cross over the road my friend? Which others were there?

Yes, thats the one, Tequila!

ShowOfHands · 28/09/2011 22:57

There was one in Come and Praise II that was something like 'By brother sun who brings the day and sheds his dazzling light and warms the world with welcome rays, By sister moon and sister stars'. Anybody remember it? Have tried googling to no avail.

BettyTurnip · 28/09/2011 22:57

Grin LetThereBeRock. We used to attempt to lift the roof off volume wise when singing O Come All Ye Faithful ("OH COME LET US ADORE HIM!!! turned up to 11).

We also sang Lily the Pink - it was a hit for Traffic I think?

Tequilamockinbird · 28/09/2011 22:58

Does nobody remember the 'speed Bonnie boy like a bird on the wing, over the sea to Skye' one then? Maybe I've made that one up? Blush

I hate Shine Jesus Shine!

Anyone sing "You've got to move when the spirit says move x2 cos when the spirit says move..."

Used to watch Badger Girl, Geordie Racer and Through the Dragon's Eye - all amazing at the age of 6/7 but unfortunately not as good now!

Tequilamockinbird · 28/09/2011 23:02

Travel on, travel on,
There's a river that is flowing
A river that is flowing night and day.
Travel on, travel on to the river that is flowing, the river will be with you all the way.

LetThereBeRock · 28/09/2011 23:03

No,it was definitely boat.Grin

TheSmallClanger · 28/09/2011 23:03

Tequila, it's "speed bonny boat". We had that one, it's really about Bonnie Prince Charlie, but our music teacher seemed to think it was about Jesus.

Did anyone else snigger uncontrollably at the line in "Water of Life" about a workman in the desert, digging with a spade that FLASHES IN THE SUN!

Tequilamockinbird · 28/09/2011 23:04

This has been fabulous but I must go to bed now or I'll never get up for work!

Please keep them coming though, I'll read them whilst eating my breakfast Grin

He gave me eyes so i could see the colours of the world,
Without my eyes I could not see the other boys and girls,
He gave me ears so I could hear , the wind , the rain, the sea,
I've got to tell it to the world,
He made me!

I went to primary school until 1984.

Vicars assembly on Wednesdays,
Loved hymn practice on Thursdays,
Team points on Fridays,

Yes to the projector and changing the OHPs.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 28/09/2011 23:04

Yes, The Skye Boat Song, definitely real!

And Wordy from Look and Read- and his Magic magic e! (which you can still find on youtube, but I am too lazy for links tonight) All together now..."MAN...can have a MANE with me, CAN...can be a CANE with me, PAN...can be a PANE with me, magic magic E"

oreocrumbs · 28/09/2011 23:05

beyondlimits - that was one of my favourites at school - I'd forgotton that. I'm listening to it now!

BeyondLimitsOfTheLivingDead · 28/09/2011 23:07

Thinking about it, I think I started primary in 1990...?

Ponders · 28/09/2011 23:09

my school had Morning has Broken in the 50s & 60s

(it's Robert Browning I think? Cat Stevens only borrowed it)

WoodBetweenTheWorlds · 28/09/2011 23:10

Brilliant thread - so many old favourites!

I got told off at school for sniggering at the "naked" bits in "were you there, were you there."

I also used to get told off for laughing when people added on the extra "of kings" after the last line of "sing hosanna". It was so predictable - no matter how many times we sang it, there would always be one kid who got it wrong.

Used to love kumbaya and "would you walk by on the other side", "rise & shine & give god the glory".

Oh, those were the days!

Mspontipine · 28/09/2011 23:11

Ooh "When a knight won his spurs" Smile
