South London: what private girls' schools are there, and what do you know about them?

Near SW4 (Clapham) - where should I start? DDs aren't of school age yet so interested in prep schools initially. Any idea of which ones I should investigate much appreciated, as are any thoughts/experiences you may have. Thanks.

the free part of this site is useful

Broomwood is v traditional in style but otherwise looks v good
No personal experience to report

CIS at the councils (Lambeth and Wandsworth) will send you a list if you call them I think

Think Thomas's is also close (just off the common, but forgotten which road) and seems to be a nice school. (Nanny friend's charges went there).
The children I looked ater all went to Alleyns in Dulwich. Bit of a trek, but lovely school if you can face the drive.

Are you thinking girls' schools (as in your title)? I think you are on the track of Streatham and Clapham if this is the case. Most preps are co-ed in our bit of South London. The GDST has a website if this is any use to you. And their results in the (dare I say it??) Sunday Times list are very very good.

Thanks all. We're thinking probably Streatham & Clapham or James Allen's - any further thoughts v welcome.

Franch - I am presuming you know that JA is mixed at prep stage? In which case there are a few others in the Dulwich area that you could consider. Competition is pretty tough at JA as they are vastly oversubscribed. You would probably be well advised to apply elsewhere too. There are many in the area - Herne Hill, Alleyns, Oakfield and Rosemead would all be possibilities.

last I heard Alleyns had 34 applications for every place .. but I'm sure not at prep level

I think all the private schools are oversubscribed

I use to live near Allen's (don't if spelt write) in Dulwich. Had a few friends that went their, Seemed okay expensive but okay.

Twiglett I wouldn't be at all surprised if that was at Prep level! They are all vastly oversubscribed.

Thanks all. Jan yes JAPS is mixed at pre-prep level ie up to age 7 - good point. Are all the others you mention all girls?
