Do you send your kids to school on their birthdays?

My dds have the same birthday and this year I am planning on keeping them off so they can enjoy their birthday.
The alternative is sending them, them not having 5 mins to open their pressies let alone play with them and then with a heavy heart sending them off crying. Not for me.
If they got up at 5am and had chance to play I wouldnt mind but we barely have time for anything in the morning as it is so it would be chaotic...anyway...how much trouble am I going to get in for this? Do I lie and say they both had tummy bugs or what? What do you do?

The example IMO is this is the day I gave birth to you, your Birthday and I would prefer if you were at home with me enjoying your toys and your day...
...If they want to go to school I will take them. I wont force them to stay home!
Its one day in a whole year.
Have your kids never appeared to be ill and by the time its 9.45 they are fine but you dont bother to send them in?

No.

Blandmum · 12/11/2005 15:00

no, because that would mean my letting down the children I teach and other members of staff, as well as sending a bad example to my kids

Same here, Martianbishop.

Personally, I want my kids to see that you have to go to work or school unless you are genuinely ill.

hercules · 12/11/2005 15:02

Hi cod!

charliecat · 12/11/2005 15:02

This year d's school is still on holidays on her birthday but mt school is back in work....the first day after the holidays. people would rightly be pissed off with me if I took an extra day. I can just imagine what people would type on MN
'Bloody teachers get all that holiday and then they take an extra day.....'

charliecat · 12/11/2005 15:03

Well dp said you dont as an adult have the day off do you? I said Nooooooo but how many people never make it to work the day AFTER because they are nursing a hangover.
And anyway...they are my kids and it really is just One Day.

And they probably will grass me up, which is why i was asking how much trouble id be in.

That's the point though. It's not a good example not to go to work as you have a hangover. Depends what you want to teach your kids.

Yes, the teachers will slag you off.

BadHair · 12/11/2005 15:05

No. Ds1 doesn't get a day at home unless he really IS ill. It's only happened once so far, and as he really was sick. However, if he had made a miraculous recovery he would have been dressed and at school within 10 minutes. And he knows it, so he doesn't often bother trying it on.
Your attitude to school seems to be that it's something to be endured rather than enjoyed. Shame, really.

hercules · 12/11/2005 15:05

You will be known as an unsupportive parent.

The teachers will think it is a crap idea and that you don't think much of the importance of school.

I can guarentee it.

It is you call, they are your kids, but that is what the staff will think. Actions and consequences and all that

charliecat · 12/11/2005 15:06

Oh what a nasty mummy keeping her kids at home on thier B.day? Aww mean mummy. Oh well. Never mind.

OP posts:
hercules · 12/11/2005 15:06

they'll also remember it for years and refer to it each time your kids are discussed.

Enid · 12/11/2005 15:07

poor dd

her birthday is on the 20th dec

not only the last day of school BUT they are also rehearsing the school play all afternoon then having the show in the evening

so not much of a birthday there

edam · 12/11/2005 15:07

Bizarre thread. Would never have occurred to me. Mind you, I had the sort of mother who would say 'it's only a cold!' and send you to school however ill you were, short of actually being hospitalised.

Blandmum · 12/11/2005 15:07

no, they will think, 'mummy who doesn't give a damn what we do here, and thinks it is more imprtant to open new presents than learn to read, mummy is a muppet'
