Do you send your kids to school on their birthdays?

My dds have the same birthday and this year I am planning on keeping them off so they can enjoy their birthday.
The alternative is sending them, them not having 5 mins to open their pressies let alone play with them and then with a heavy heart sending them off crying. Not for me.
If they got up at 5am and had chance to play I wouldnt mind but we barely have time for anything in the morning as it is so it would be chaotic...anyway...how much trouble am I going to get in for this? Do I lie and say they both had tummy bugs or what? What do you do?

Charliecat's girls currently do not enjoy their Birthdays' at school-that's not to say they will enjoy their Birthdays at school in the future.I think CC is doing what is right for her girls, not herself and I agree with Spidermama that life is indeed too short to be pontificating over how wrong it is to let your kids have one day a year off!!

(Adding her twopennence worth, she runs and hides!!)

Am not doing this on purpose! How do I get it to stop?

Ellbell, we have a Thomas book with the classic line:

"Percy chuffed up next to Thomas"

whenever we read it to ds1, dp and I cannot stop laughing.

Nice one, Cod! I spluttered coffee over the breakfast table!

Getting a day off school for my birthday was never an option - usually because it fell in the first week of the new academic year (and often was the first day of term). Always felt like peeing myself in a dark suit cos no one remembered and spent the day chatting about their holidays.

My brother had a similar problem - his birthday is the day after mine (but he is 5 years older).

My son's birthday is a few days before Christmas so it always coincides with the parties etc - so he doesn't want to take the day off.

My daughter prefers to go to school on her birthday.

DD's birthday is in the summer holidays. I can just imagine the fun and games if I gave her brother the day off for his birthday, and she didn't get one in lieu!

Noones going to believe me but dd2 was in my bed this morning at 4.30 saying she felt like she was going to be sick.
So theres the perfect excuse for the day off school. Couldnt risk a 40 minute bus journey with one of them possibly spewing.

(my friends little boy who we spent saturday with woke up sunday morning spewing and pooping himself)

So all legit now after all.

ladymuck · 21/11/2005 09:06

Sorry that she's feeling poorly on her birthday.

Will she be celebrating tomorrow instead?

crackingchristmascat · 21/11/2005 09:07

LOL, Hopefully not, but if she is sick today then maybe..

16 year old thread - a new record perhaps !

This is somewhat a tricky question. But it is not really a good reason for absence in my mind. You could always send them in with a box of sweets or chocolates, and invite a friend home afterwards for a birthday tea and film etc. I loved having to attend school on my birthdays, my mom would send me in with a box of chocolates or sweets and the entire class wished me happy birthday.

@languagelover96 check the date on the thread. Suspect OP’s kids are well into their 20s now…
