Do you send your kids to school on their birthdays?

My dds have the same birthday and this year I am planning on keeping them off so they can enjoy their birthday.
The alternative is sending them, them not having 5 mins to open their pressies let alone play with them and then with a heavy heart sending them off crying. Not for me.
If they got up at 5am and had chance to play I wouldnt mind but we barely have time for anything in the morning as it is so it would be chaotic...anyway...how much trouble am I going to get in for this? Do I lie and say they both had tummy bugs or what? What do you do?

emphasis in school now, aloha ,is on Learning and not on teaching. OFSTED inspect and look for learning not teaching.

And true you will learn more about riding while riding, but that could be done on the weekend. Whilst today in my Y9 class the kids got to see Alkali metals burst into flames when they entered water, planned 'thought' experiemnets with their friends, discussed out comes and presented their ideas to the rest of the class. Fact, group work and discussion, pesentation skills, formula writing, All in 70 minutes. Which can't be repeated on the weekend at home.

Very well put aloha, I couldnt of put it better. This thread has been jumped on so much, I just cant believe it.

I cant see the harm in taking a child out of school for 1 day when other parents I know send their children in when they are ill and spreading the bugs around the school, that cant be good for the school, when they dont feed their children properly - no breakfast etc. When they allow the children to go to bed far too late at night, when they dont support the children with homework etc.

My dd's arent at school yet, we have so much fun at the moment, lots of long weekends away in a caravan at the coast, which they love, swimming sessions (during the week when its a lot quietier) and I am worried about how much school will impact on all of this, because it will, we just wont be able to do what we do now when they are at school all day for 5 days a week. I also struggled at school, didnt have a very easy time and I am worried that my dd's will have a similar experience. School may be fine, and they love it, I certainly hope so.

wicked. I love the flaming metals stuff. one of the best bits I rmemeber from school.

Went to an open day on Saturday and the chemistry dept were demo'ing chromatography, making sparklers, how not to burn a fiver, etc. And all the visiting children oculd have a go. Wicked!

aloha · 14/11/2005 21:51

Well I can see both your points! And your lessons do sound very interesting MB - even, dare I say it...quite fun.

YOU HAVE A LEGAL REQUIREMENT TO SEND YOUR CHILDREN TO SCHOOL. What bit of it is not to your liking?

And no - children shouldn't question the school when it comes to why they have to go on their birthdays. And parents shouldn't break the law when it comes to sending their children to school. Don't pick and choose the bits you don't like, and don't encourage your children to dog school.

aloha · 14/11/2005 22:13

PG - you don't actually have a legal requirement to send children to school. It's optional.

Mind you, if you are registered at school it is technically illegal to withdraw them...unless for religious observance, surreally.

paolosgirl · 14/11/2005 22:43

Yes Aloha. If they are registered, and the kids in the original thread are, then it's illegal not to send them to school.

I haven;t heard the word "chuffin'" for ages. Bruilliant! I'm going to pepper my everyday speech with it

Bikermum · 14/11/2005 22:46

i've heard that the goverment is thinking of having schools open from six in the morning till six at night, well that should suit a lot of you shouldn't it, longer school hours must be great for 'YOU'. Think about what message you are sending to your children that you would prefer to send them to school on their birthday than have them hassling you.
I mean what bad parents the rest of us are to enjoy having our kids around us. such a crime!shock

"Think about what message you are sending to your children that you would prefer to send them to school on their birthday than have them hassling you."

am I believing my eyes? prefer to send them to school on their birthday? that's the law love unless it happens to be school holiday! I'm quite staggered!

intergalacticwalrus · 14/11/2005 23:18

I used to go to school, birthday or unbirthday, come rain or shine, and if we were lucky, we'd get coal for us tea, and then me dad would give us a clip round t'ear. EEEEEEE.

WellieMum · 14/11/2005 23:33

You were looky.... we used to dream of coal for tea and a clip round t'ear... we 'ad 30 mile walk to school then a full day's work down t'mill, with only a coop of warm water....

JoolsToo · 14/11/2005 23:36

Ellbell · 14/11/2005 23:40

Intergalacticwalrus

Lots of chuffin' going on round here.

Did anyone see the clip in Saturday's Guardian from the ELC catalogue, where they were advertising some Thomas the Tank Engine toy as 'Thomas and his chuffing friends'?

Otherwise, and once again, just PAAAAAARP!

Ellbell · 14/11/2005 23:43

But agree with whoever it was said this thread is like an operation on TV. I don't want to, but I just have to keep coming back for a sneaky look....
