Do you send your kids to school on their birthdays?

My dds have the same birthday and this year I am planning on keeping them off so they can enjoy their birthday.
The alternative is sending them, them not having 5 mins to open their pressies let alone play with them and then with a heavy heart sending them off crying. Not for me.
If they got up at 5am and had chance to play I wouldnt mind but we barely have time for anything in the morning as it is so it would be chaotic...anyway...how much trouble am I going to get in for this? Do I lie and say they both had tummy bugs or what? What do you do?

Charliecat, my 3 kids' birthdays are all in the same week! There's 12 months between them so they all have friends of similar ages. Usually, we go abroad-celebrate their birthdays everynight for a fortnight!-but as my eldest is now in the juniors we aren't going to be able to do it anymore. They're birthdays are in May so i've always taken them out for a week/fortnight. What i've decided to do next year is to let them each take a friend to the zoo or something similar but just on one day at the weekend!!!As far as their individual birthdays, it's true....they will get made a fuss of in school - especially if you let them wear their badges and just give them a birthday tea at night with a few relatives/friends. Sound ok?

"I think you'll also be surprised that the most wonderful celebrations and events are not remembered by your children when they grow up, memory just doesn't necessarily work like that.."

Oh agree totally on that, although my parents never kept me off school - they threw me wonderful parties - my mum would bake cakes, biscuits, chocolate eclairs - the lot - and I'd have all my friends over (I know this from pictures and her telling me about them). I don't really remember any of them though - but have other memories of stuff that wasn't even birthday related....

my mum used to give me "mental health days when I was 12 and 13, I was never ill and rarely off school, we'd go shopping and have posh lunch in cafe and dinner out and a film.
It was marvellous, I remember those with love and joy now... Not saying she was right and wrong, my folks had just split up and it meant the world to me. I was good at school too

HRHQoQ, we have been to OZ in July/Aug pre children and it was quite cold, certainly not warm enough for young children to go in the sea. Not sure what the weather is like Easter time, would probably tag a holliday on to the 2 week easter break if poss, try to go for 3-4 weeks.

charliecat · 14/11/2005 13:03

OMG is this still raging over here....
The kids birthday is on Monday so I will update you all then on how it goes
I am perfectly aware that noone other than me gives a shit that it is their birthday for those who have said when they are adults and they dont get the day off work etc.
But im my mind, and obviously it is only my mind, by not sending them to school I am saying, Hey you two...your so precious and this is your special day, that I would like you to be at home with me....
I KNOW they shouldnt miss school. But they are going to anyway...because I break my neck to get them there every other day but on that particular day im not going too.
My friend regularly sleeps in so doesnt send the kids in because they will be late..I would send my kids in late rather than keep them of all day. Different Folks Different Strokes.
Some people send kids in with snotty noses/nits/impetigo/the shits/molloscum/flu some dont/same thing really.
Some do most dont in this case!!!!!

Quite ridiculous to compare these things imo.
