Just wondering if indi schools take students in any year, if so, what is the procedure?

Most do, just call the one you are interested in and ask if they have a space in the year group.

My DD entered her indie school at year 10 as they have slightly more room as the GCSE classes tend to be a bit smaller.

Her school has a testing day (is selective although not hugely)for all year groups (except year11) in January and if they pass the test and interview they are offered a place if there is one available.

We wanted to DD to go in the term before but there wasn't room.

But Independent schools all have different proceedures for new pupils so I suppose you will just have to ask the school you are interested in.

What kind of exams do they tend to sit? is it still VB and NVB?

It depends on the school. If it's a prep then probably nothing unless it's academically selective, then it may be maths, english & verbal reasoning.

Yes as long as there are places. There will be a set day each year for entrance exams but if a child needs to move at a different time for example moving into the area then often it will be arranged.

There was a special entrance exam dy this week at dd's school as another local indie school has just announced it is closing.

Ds missed the assessment day for his, they just arranged a different day.

DD (took the year 9 test to enter in year 10)had more curriculum tests based on the work they expected of the age group- All three sciences, maths, english and French.

The test to enter the school at year 7 was english maths and VR.

What year is your child. If she happens to be at the age for one of the formal entries, it can be tricker (year 6 for girls, year 3 or 8 for boys, year 6 for boys if old grammar school) as these points of entry have formal processes and spare places later in the year before those points are generally offered to those who have gone through the process. However, persistant and luckily-timed phone calls can succeed. Also depends how popular the school is, of course, and how frenetic the area. Away from these key entry times and from the absolutely sought after schools, hit the phones and be persistent. If you tell me the age, I can say more about likely tests.
