I have reusable pads. I have silicone straws. I have reusable pouches for frozen food.

But I don’t think I could bring myself to use reusable toilet paper

I have period pants and think those are great. Also washable make up remover pads.

scottishthistle77 · 26/07/2022 12:20

Those not liking reusable straws because you can't see if they are dirty inside, buy straw cleaners. They are like really thin bottle brushes and it's only a few quid on Amazon for a set of them.

For me it's toilet roll, but then I'm weird and don't even like sharing the same bath towels with anyone. So a communal stack of reusable toilet wipes is a big no from me.

RamblingEclectic · 26/07/2022 12:20

While I love Splosh's surface cleaners and hand soap, their shower stuff and my family are just not getting on. Shower stuff is one of the harder areas for us.

Eco-Toothpastes. I've tried the toothpaste tablets and they seem great, but my tooth sensitivity comes back within a few days. If I could get Colgate Total in toothpaste tablet form, that would be great.

Iffy with LED bulbs, at least for dimmers - they just don't do the low settings well.

One 'eco' thing I do love, but isn't really eco friendly when I think of it is reuseable ice cubes. I hate having ice in my drinks, how they feel on my teeth, and the taste of melted ice, but I bought a box on from B&M for my kids as more contained than an ice tray and in the recent heat wave they were a blessing to everyone.

WhackingPhoenix · 26/07/2022 12:22

Oh, I use reusable cotton pads too for skincare! The only problem is I always lose them in the wash Grin

Barrawarra · 26/07/2022 12:28

Another mooncup lover here - they are great in ways you never expected. For me it’s bamboo toothbrushes. I’ve not found one firm enough and don’t like the feel in the mouth.

Sapphirejane · 26/07/2022 12:29

We did try reusable baby wipes for a bit but I found they went rough quickly and were too rough for my newborns skin. We just use them as general rags now. We live in a very hard water area and I don’t have a tumble drier for eco reasons.

Thatsenoughnow · 26/07/2022 12:38

Amecia · 26/07/2022 10:58

@Thatsenoughnow why is it 'gross'? It's just your own blood and surely you will wash your hands after? Have you never got a bit of blood on your hands before even with tampons/pads? Periods aren't gross and blood isn't gross. What terrible thing do you think will happen to you if you get some blood on your hands?

You might be ok with it but its like getting poo on your hands. Yeah it's my own poo and i can wash my hands, I'm still not doing something that's going to result it getting on my hands.

White vinegar in your wash might help :) I use it as a softener in my hard water area

WinterMusings · 26/07/2022 12:44

I was just going to say 'reuseable toilet paper'. Just No. Not even if I was still washing nappies. I'm not that squeamish when it comes to poo accidents or helping the elderly etc, but just NFW am I washing toilet 'paper'

However, I started reading the thread & agree with a few other things, I'll be back later to add to my list!

tulips27 · 26/07/2022 12:44

I wouldn't use a metal straw because one time a poor woman had an accident with one and it killed her.

Sapphirejane · 26/07/2022 12:45

@MyPenIsHuge - I have tried that with towels but I was going through so many bottles (more waste) of white vinegar and can only seem to find it in small quantities.

BlackbirdsSinging · 26/07/2022 12:49

I am not getting on with bars of soap. I have tried all manner of bamboo slatted soap holders but they still get all claggy with soap and the boys of soap that break off as the bar gets smaller are constantly blocking my sink so I end up having to put sink unblocker down to clear it which doesn’t seem very eco friendly.
I do love shampoo bars though. You don’t get the same slip you get with the bottles of conditioner etc but I figure that’s all silicon anyway. Although my hair feels dry when it’s wet, if that makes sense, it feels wonderfully soft when it’s actually dry.

No worries :) was worth a mention in case you hadn't. A spin cycle with tennis balls can soften things too :)

Sapphirejane · 26/07/2022 13:04

@MyPenIsHuge - thank you, I hadn’t heard of the tennis ball thing, I’ll give that a go!

It’s nothing like poo Confused

Re-useable nappies, or 'terry towelling' as they used to be called ..

What I don't understand is why anyone would use "reusable toilet roll" when for £50 and a youtube video you can attach a bidet sprayer to the water line going to your toilet. You actually get clean (unlike with dry paper) and then you can use cloth to dry yourself off. I keep a little basket of folded flannels next to the toilet and they go in the bathroom laundry basket with the towels.

I do keep toilet roll for guests or for when I or my daughters are on our periods (since the blood keeps coming after you clean yourself so it's nicer to dry off with paper instead of a cloth) but we literally only go through a 9 pack of andrex per year.

I always wanted a bidet but not sure how, can you recommend what one?

KeyboardWarriorsUnite · 26/07/2022 13:16

understand are those waxed wraps for sandwiches. Can someone explain why they're better than my current solution of an old ice cream tub for my sandwiches? Or even the slightly more aesthetically pleasing solution of a lunchbox?

They aren't designed to take the place of using a lunchbox. They are too be used instead of cling film or single use plastic food bags.

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 26/07/2022 13:20

I think the focus on sanitary and nappy products is misogynist. It seems to be a covert way of limiting the freedom of women again. I also thing it shows extreme western privilege, when woman in developing countries have no choices around sanitary protection.

CuteNFluffy · 26/07/2022 13:35

Period pants. I find them so uncomfortable. Love menstural cups/discs and reusable pads tho. 🤷‍♀️

UsernameFail · 26/07/2022 13:45

A moon cup is a game changer. Yes it's a bit mucky but...

I've come on holiday, got my period and forced to use tampons which do not fit and constantly need changing. What a nightmare!

Oh how I miss my moon cup

jewishmum · 26/07/2022 13:49

Training your cat to use the human toilet. Just seems like it's going to make the seat germy.

AlviarinAesSedai · 26/07/2022 13:56

Would a small spray bottle instead of bidet work?
Our local refill shop is very reasonable especially the cleaning products. They use a company called Miniml .
Obviously not the cheapest ranges but dried pulses etc same price as supermarket.

MouseShoes · 26/07/2022 14:19

Got the enyo toilet brush. After you’ve cleaned the toilet the head part comes off and goes in the washing machine. I couldn’t bring myself to put it in with anything else. Washing something that small on it’s own really defeated the ‘eco’ benefit!

Mary46 · 26/07/2022 14:35

Wasnt mad on shampoo bars at all had use alot as my hair so thick. I bought re usable make up pads they good.
