I have reusable pads. I have silicone straws. I have reusable pouches for frozen food.

But I don’t think I could bring myself to use reusable toilet paper

All the mooncup wary, what's the objection?

I really want to try a mooncup but a couple of things I'm wondering about are (probably stupidly!):

Will there be any spill when extracting the cup? I'm worried about staining my clothes etc.

Is it a case of pouring away, and wiping the moon up with toilet tissue, before re-inserting?

Am I right in thinking I need to periodically boil / sanitise the mooncup between periods, to keep it clean? Does it sit in a case or pouch between uses?

Sapphirejane · 26/07/2022 09:49

No mooncups for me either. I struggle with tampons, tried one mooncup which felt awful and can’t afford to buy and try the different mooncups to see if any are comfortable. I am also put off by the evangelical users who can’t fathom that all vaginas are different shapes and it’s possible the mooncup isn’t for everyone. I’m not talking about the people who say this really works for me, it’s the people who bang on about how everyone should be using them and they are just doing it wrong etc. I use period knickers and love them but understand why some people wouldn’t.

Wax wraps - can’t stand the texture they just do not feel clean. Tupperware just as good and also reusable.

jewishmum · 26/07/2022 09:50

Baby wipes . I use them for everything . Isn't the whole point of baby wipes so you can throw the disgusting mess you wipe in the bin!

AlviarinAesSedai · 26/07/2022 09:51

It would be the storing of the used reusable toilet cloths. If I lived alone I would use.
I just use a plate or a shower cap/tea towel as a cove.
Hate paper straws, I now carry a metal straw or ask for two paper straws. 😞

You take it out while sitting on the toilet so any spill would go down into the bowl. You pour it in the sink, wash the cup with soap and water and your hands.
Most come with a silicone case. I only wash mine.

jewishmum · 26/07/2022 09:54

Metal straws. You can't see inside if there's any gunk or mildew. I now only buy glass straws.

Sapphirejane · 26/07/2022 09:56

@AlviarinAesSedai Just a warning to be careful with metal straws and buying them from reputable places. My friend got aluminium poisoning from metal straws bought from eBay.

JustFrustrated · 26/07/2022 09:57

For those saying no to shampoo bars: you need to use a clarifying shampoo first (even washing up liquid is fine) then it can take 4/5 washes to adjust.

That being said, they're too faffy for me even though they work when they work.

Mooncups for me - everyone I've tried has hurt.

Pyewhacket · 26/07/2022 09:59

Vegan sausages: processed cardboard. Fed them to my horse, who wasn't impressed either.

MayThe4th · 26/07/2022 10:01

Reuseable anything to do with periods. Just no.

Shampoo and conditioner bars are shit.

Paper straws. I’ll just drink out of the cup/botle.

AlviarinAesSedai · 26/07/2022 10:01

I hope we will be okay had straws for about three years @Sapphirejane . I wash with little brush and boiling water. They definitely taste like metal, much prefer my glass one.
Do worry they will go rusty inside.

daisyjgrey · 26/07/2022 10:02

Menstrual cups are a revelation. Less period pain, shorter periods, less faff. I wouldn't ever go back to sanitary towels or tampons.

The poster above who said about a washable plastic tampon applicator, that exists, I just can't remember the name of it.

Washable loo roll is great, it cleans better than paper toilet roll. We only use for wees though and the washing machine is right in front of the loo so it just goes straight in.

Paper straws can fuck off though, and metal/bamboo ones as well. I'm always suspicious about whether there's still dried bits of smoothie lodged up there.

FirstAidKitNowPlease · 26/07/2022 10:03

Mooncup great - couldn't use tampons after second birth but found a mooncup that was great. The actual mooncup brand was horribly hard ime though.

Period pants great

Reusable pads. Just too bulky (or perhaps I've got the wrong ones.

Mini pads for liners are better but still bulky and unfortunately unless midwinter and wearing a few layers.

disneylover367 · 26/07/2022 10:04

Re-useable straws. I just buy regular plastic ones. I never buy face wipes, mainly a cost thing though, I wash flannels pretty much every use otherwise they go manky especially with an oil based cleanser. I think many things are green washing, the main polluters are the fishing Industry and all the extra manufacturing of 'Eco friendly' products just cause more waste and pollution.

FirstAidKitNowPlease · 26/07/2022 10:05

Rosewaterblossom · 26/07/2022 09:29

I tried a mooncup last period and found the smell really unpleasant when I removed it. I wash everyday etc so assumed its where the plastic cup is sitting "up" there for hours at a time. The plastic absorbs the "period" smell. 🤢

@Rosewaterblossom
When I had the foul smell issue there was some kind of infection going on. It was horrific and I couldn't empty cup in bathroom if others were using after me.

I then went on course of antibiotics for something else and it cleared it completely coincidentally.

How do they make your periods shorter? 🤔 😊

Sapphirejane · 26/07/2022 10:06

@AlviarinAesSedai - If you are feeling well I wouldn’t worry. My friend starting feeling unwell, went for various blood tests and they highlighted high aluminium levels in her blood. She guessed it was the straws and stopped using them and the levels went down.

I personally use reusable clear plastic straws and clean with a brush. I know plastic isn’t ideal but it’s not single use and I am terrified of breaking a glass straw.

stackhead · 26/07/2022 10:09

Gwenhwyfar · 26/07/2022 09:19

I won't give up my tampons. I also don't want plastic applicators to disapper (I couldn't use them at all until I found plastic) and would be willing to have a re-usable, washable applicator.
Mooncups aren't yuck, but I just couldn't cope with it.

No to reusable toilet paper. I also use kitchen paper that I then throw away to clean the bathroom. I'm not convinced reusable ones are more eco in the end with the amount of washing they generate.

Main eco thing I won't do is switch off the heating when I'm cold.

I agree that shampoo bars don't work, but they may get better in future. I've tried them for flying.

I agree about wooden cutlery too. Totally spoils the taste.

Just in case no one has mentioned this yet. Try DAME, reusable tampon applicator.

Kamia · 26/07/2022 10:10

I don't know if it's reusable but I hate paper straws, they get soggy and ineffective. I hope someone can find an alternative.

Sapphirejane · 26/07/2022 10:11

@Rosewaterblossom I’d love to know the biology behind that too.

AppleBottomRats · 26/07/2022 10:12

I don’t like the thought of reusable toilet paper either, even though I’m on board with reusable nappies and wipes which is the same thing 🤔

I have reusable pads and love them. I had to get disposables recently when I got caught out on holiday and felt like I was wearing a nappy!

GrowlingManchego · 26/07/2022 10:12

@Rosewaterblossom when you remove a menstrual cup the suction gently draws the blood out. Mine is a day or two shorter than if I use tampons.

Clairewentoverthemountain · 26/07/2022 10:14

Reusable toilet paper is an absolute NO from me and also I can't see how it's that eco friendly as would constantly be running the washing machine. Surely more eco-friendly to just get those bum-guns like they have beside the toilet in some countries like India, where you sort of spray it and use it to clean yourself?

Also Mooncups aren't appealing to me.

PermanentlyTired03 · 26/07/2022 10:17

@Hawkseye agreed! The best one I've seen was a £50 reusable tissues set with silicon box. It came with 5 cotton hankies. 5. For £50.

ChagSameachDoreen · 26/07/2022 10:17

I don't bother with any of it.

It's all part of the consumerism it's trying to mitigate.

Me using a metal straw isn't going to put a dent in the damage done by the massive corporations responsible for climate degradation.

It's a con.
