Tory Leadership/Climate Change

It seems ironic that on the two days that are predicted to be historically hot, National Emergency, red Met Warning, etc. and - very likely - the beginning of us reaping what we've sown environmentally, the Tory leadership contenders will be setting out more of their pitiful stalls, lying about stuff and trying out-do each other on the magnificence that they're about to unleash on the country, if someone would just give them a chance.

Ironic in that they are mostly seemingly reluctant to mention green policies and climate change, for fear of sounding (vile phrase, but here goes): 'woke.' Isn't that a bit pathetic?

BJ is, as no one will be surprised to know, apparently chilling at Chequers, not giving a flying fuck about anything to do with anything anymore, and is barely on the record for showing any concern about the hundreds of people predicted to die in the heat next week. He's 'listening' or something or other.

AIBU to think it's all a bit shit?

U OK hun?

U OK hun?

The old ones are the best, eh?

They're a bunch of cunts who only care about feathering their own nest. No they don't give a fuck about the environment or anybody else

InNeedOfPracticalAdvice · 15/07/2022 20:20

Ah but many rich and powerful people have dabblings in fossil fuels. Green energy doesn't pay so well. I never understood as a kid why we didn't use hydro power being an island and all but many of them don't see it as their issue. its for their kids and grandkids to pay the price

VeniVidiWeeWee · 15/07/2022 20:23

@Kant

Then try composing a thread that makes sense.

Mr Johnson introduced the, frankly ludicrous, concept of carbon neutral.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 15/07/2022 20:29

@InNeedOfPracticalAdvice in

User name is appropriate.

Hydro electric requires a sufficient head of water. What does being an island matter?

Boatswainy · 15/07/2022 20:29

VeniVidiWeeWee

Did you actually read the thread?

The OP is bang on. Go on then. How much have the leadership candidates been flagging up green policies or climate change in the hustings?

Waiting.

Boatswainy · 15/07/2022 20:30

Then try composing a thread that makes sense

The thread makes perfect sense. Trying to defend the Tories on green issues and climate change is fucking moronic.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 15/07/2022 20:36

Yes, and as I stated, BJ introduced the idea of carbon neutral.

I really don't care how much any candidate is pushing "green" issues.

While MN favourites the EU are reintroducing coal fired power staions I thin the UK is doing pretty well.

Whilst not paying that nice Mr Putin an absolute fortune.

Kant · 15/07/2022 20:43

I really don't care how much any candidate is pushing "green" issues

And yet, that's literally what the thread is about. 🙄

Then argue the point that the Tories didn't impose carbon neutral, causing huge economic problems.

Kant · 15/07/2022 20:51

Then argue the point that the Tories didn't impose carbon neutral, causing huge economic problems

Start your own thread and argue it.

Go on then. How much have the leadership candidates been flagging up green policies or climate change in the hustings?

Anything yet? Because that's what THIS thread is about...

Thought Tom Tugenhats position was very logical and credible

Thought Tom Tugenhats position was very logical and credible

He's by far the best candidate.

The government has already, quietly, told our fossil fuel stations not to worry about COp26. Russian war in Europe means our CO2 emissions don't matter anymore. 🙄 Energy security doesn't matter anymore.

It does matter. We have amazing, untapped, renewable, green energy around us All we need to do is make it more profitable to Conservative party donors than their shares in oil, gas and coal.

We're fucked aren't we?🤦‍♀️

jcyclops · 16/07/2022 00:32

The Cons do have some green policies. They were close to a trial for affordable houses that can be built without destroying trees on the site - the first was going to cost £150,000 and be tested by Wilf Johnson at Chequers

Of course, Keir "Rain Man" Starmer would have prevented the imminent heatwave.

JamMakingWannaBe · 16/07/2022 00:51

I noticed this too OP. Whatever strategy they have to tackle the cost of living, bring down inflation, stimulate the economy (and protect single sex spaces) needs to consider the climate emergency.

They've just changed the discount available for buying electric vehicles. Lets get that discount back on the table for starters.

They can't/won't address it because it's too challenging. You can't WFH to save fuel whilst also supporting Costa/Pret/Wetherspoons and any tax cut money in your pocket is going straight on heating/eating not on solar panels or a heat pump boiler.

Much easier to keep the separate male: female signs on loo doors.
