dh wants to buy some tools off ebay using my paypal account, all fine until we get to checkout (is a buy it now) and it says the ebayer cannot accept paypal at the moment and we can buy the tools using a credit card but have to phone her on a mobile number.

I contacted her to say we want to pay by paypal only and she is saying that she has reached her recieving limit on paypal and it will be 5 days til it is sorted.

She wants me to give me credit card details over her mobile phone. This doesnt sound right to me as I cannot see how the purchase will be recorded by paypal/ebay and I will have no proof that I have paid or how much.

She has also suggested that I send the money to her dad's [paypal account instead, but again I can't see that that would be right somehow.

She has 100% feedback and is probably legit but I cant help thinking that I dont want to give someone my credit card details over the phone like this.

The tools are £160 which is a lot of money to us.

I would only pay by paypal tbh. It probably is legit, but not worth the risk.

scurryfunge · 06/07/2010 16:33

I would wait until her paypal is sorted.

gingernutlover · 06/07/2010 16:42

i am all for waiting until the paypal works and it would be better for us to wait until end of the week as then I can be in for the day it is delivered (as I work one end of the week)

however, i almost feel she is badgering me to pay in this other way.

I have no real reason to think she isnt legit but i have a funny feeling that I cant explain.

i have reached my limit and had an email from paypal saying basically don't worry it will take 5 days to sort out but in the meantime you can still use your account as normal and i have bought and sold therefore made and received payments without problem in this time so be very wary of her xxx

CaptainKirksNipples · 07/07/2010 11:57

I was about to say that clpsmum, I think I reached the £1200 limit and they wanted extra checks on my bank account (that account address matched my home address, and I had a home phone number) but I'm sure I could still use my account as normal.

I had the checks too when I reached my limit and I was able to carry on using the account as normal.
Alarm bells are ringing. Don't do it. It's a lot of money. Under Ebay rules, she HAS to offer paypal.

aristocat · 07/07/2010 17:57

another here who says dont do it.
you are right to be cautious - dont buy them if you are not sure.

gingernutlover · 12/07/2010 09:19

grrrrr dh wants the tools, so i told her we would wait until her paypal was working, then pay

well that was a week ago and it is still not working. I don't know what to do. Do I tell her no thanks and cancel or do I wait a bit longer, how long is reasonable?

I certainly wouldn't be giving out my credit card details to a random stranger over the phone.

With your number what's to stop her using it to make purchases over the phone?

gingernutlover · 12/07/2010 10:20

as I have said I have no intention of giving her my credit card number! Don't worry ...

My query now is how long is reasonable to wait to get her paypal account sorted?
